When were you there? I landed in PR the same day as the OKC bombing. Loved San Juan but wanted to get out into the countryside. The weirdest thing was looking down over one of the old spanish forts into the courtyard of a Hooters! Hated that!

I was there in the summer of '98. My mom lived about a quarter mile from there and she wanted me to see her condo before she sold it and came to live with me and my wife after being widowed for the second time. I have a picture of that very same "Hooters" but did not visit it. My wife and I, along with mom went to the more local restaurants instead but we did visit the "Hard Rock Cafe".

What a drag for her to lose her husband and then to have to leave there. It's a beautiful place.

I was there on business but my client, who had also become a friend, and I decided we would pay for our hotel for the weekend and stay since our flights were paid for by our companies. We arrived on a Wednesday, had our meeting with their local people on Thursday and stayed on our own until Sunday. The local folks took us to the restaurant at Chi Chi Rodriquez' golf course for lunch and we ate at the Chart House on our own one night for dinner (apparently it's not there anymore according to their website.)

We did end up at that Hard Rock one day after climbing all over both of the large forts in San Juan because by that time we were walking back along the docks and were so thirsty we couldn't stand it anymore. One night, we got a bottle of wine and sat out on a little cove near our hotel and watched fireworks across the water. It was a great trip. Wish I could have done it with someone I was in love with! Ah, well! Maybe next time.

How have you done it? I have so much weight to lose, myself, that it is a bit discouraging.

I lost 4 lbs before going to Hawaii and managed to gain every single one back by the time we returned home. And, that's with swimming and hiking! :(

Actually it started before I learned of the diabetes. In June, my doc told me "lose weight or die." I didn't begin then, but that sank in deeply.

Later in June we had a barbecue. One of my friends from my former job was there. She had had bariatric surgery years before. I asked her, if she didn't mind telling me, how much she weighed when she had the surgery. She weighed forty pounds less than I did on that date. That sank in deeply, too (like, "ohhhhh, shiiiit..."), but still it wasn't enough.

My best friend was also at that party. He was here for a week from California. I took him to Mount Vernon, which one tours by walking, and I couldn't keep up. I had to sit down while he investigated half of the plantation. When he went home, he told my sister, "I wish she'd warned me of her condition."

That was the last straw.

68. Yes, when we can't physically do what we need to do..

..that's it. I can't keep up with my husband the way I used to.

My last straw was when my father visited. He has been overweight since his 40's and it has taken it's toll on him. Now, because he never got the weight off, he can barely walk at all at 73 years and is on high blood pressure medication. I'm afraid my father will end up in a wheelchair. So, it becomes a catch 22 eventually. That is...a person can't get around because of the weight, but can't get the weight off because they can't get around! That was a real wake-up call to me...and very sad to see the weight has gotten the best of my Dad. :(

Take care...I'll keep you posted on my attempts to lose weight. Maybe we can help motivate each other!
