9. Nope, my fourth organized century.
not counting the CA AIDS Ride I did back in 2000, when 3000 of us cycled from SF to LA over the course of a week and the first two days were like back-to-back centuries. Yowsah!! :D

BUT, it was the first century I've done in six years, since back when I was in training for the AIDS Ride, which is why I'm really proud of myself.

:hi: and thanks!!

15. Yup, we had some light rain between miles 60-70
took me by surprise, but it never got too bad. Just light sprinkles, but as we came back in towards Santa Cruz, we could really tell they'd gotten a lot more rain, so I guess we lucked out. We took it slow, since it was the first rain of the season.

:hi: and thanks!!

I didn't see or hear Oeditpus Rex, but I thought of him as I was in his neck o' the woods...:D

wasn't quite expecting that, but we managed. Light sprinkles, it coulda been worse I suppose. The winds weren't that bad coming into Castroville, either, so we lucked out. The headwinds can get really intense in that area.

I have no idea, exactly, but I can guess it was over 5,000 or 6,000. There was some good climbing, but nothing too outrageous. Of course, I was re-fueling as much as I could during the ride so I wouldn't bonk.

They served us a nice hearty meal at the end of the ride, too.

Good luck on yours next week!! :yourock: This was my first one in over 6 yrs, so I'm particularly proud of myself today. :D

35. I'd recommend doing a metric century first.
which is about 62 miles. It's a good stepping stone goal to a full-on century and definitely a worthy challenge.

Be on the lookout for organized rides in your area. Those are always fun to do b/c they're fully supported, with rest stops, SAG support (Support And Gear), etc...plus you get the comraderie of riding with others who are doing the same thing. It's really fun!!!

Today's century was called the Surf City Century. They had a 25 mi route, a metric century route and a full century route. It was a benefit ride for the local Santa Cruz AIDS Project. It's always a pleasure to combine something I love doing with a good cause.

Good on ya with the 20 mile rides!! You're off to an excellent start...:D

I should mention this to Mr. Writer, who has been helping me with riding since I no longer can run (weakening knees). My sister used to ride in the MS 150 from Denton, TX, to Oklahoma.

58. isn't that easy to get used to?
Time in the saddle?

It is unusual for me to hear a bike seat called a "saddle" although I use the horse-riding term 'posting up' to myself. I wonder how that would compare to going 100 miles on the back of a horse?

I will have to see if I can determine what sort of bike you are riding. I have two trek 7100s, but I have not gone very far on them. In my 30s I put several thousands of miles on my trek 700. The furthest in one day was about 130 miles, and it was brutal. I felt like I was limping home the last 30 miles or so. Wiping out at mile 60 did not help either. Plus the day before I had gone some 60 miles and not had alot of sleep. On another day I went 90 some miles though without too much trouble, although it was like alot of my long rides - You go 30 or 40 miles and it is awesome - a blast. After 60 or 70 miles you are starting to get tired and just want to get home. Trouble is, homes is still 15-20 miles away over some hills.

64. I've got a 27 speed Cannondale road bike
I've modified it by changing out the stem and handlebar, the seat and clipless pedals. I use all the granny gears around here, since we've got so many mountains.

I've always heard it called "the saddle", don't know where it came from. Yeah, it's a funny term. I can't imagine 100 miles on the back of a horse. Ouch. I guess it all just takes getting used to, eh?

Wow, 130 miles in a day! Impressive. The most I've ever done is about 103, but when I did the CA AIDS Ride (SF to LA, 575 miles, over the course of a week) the first two days were like back-to-back centuries. That was pretty intense.

Yesterday's century wasn't too bad. There were only a couple of good climbs and the highest one only went up to about 1000 ft....however, it was right after the lunch stop, around mile 50!! LOL. Slow and steady got us up that one..

Today, one day out from the ride, I'm sore in my thighs, but other than that, I feel pretty damn good, considering. It hurts to go up stairs! :D I'm taking it easy for the rest of the week and getting a massage on Wed. :bounce:

42. Thanks, Floog!
yeah, anything over a two hour ride requires major planning on the liquid scene or else you'll bonk big time. Today I went through about 2 qts of Cytomax, a great sport drink I use, on top of all the regular water I was drinking, too. Hydration is key for performance. Live and learn, eh?

The "down side" to drinking so much, of course, is the requirement of having to pee all the time. I had to stop at every rest stop to handle that, but hey, it was worth it, cuz I feel pretty decent right now, considering I've been up since 4am and it's now going on 9pm. I'll sleep well tonite. :D

:hi: :pals: Thanks, again.

51. Why thank you, kind Sir!
Yes, I do love my bike. I use all 27 gears quite well, especially here in the Santa Cruz mountains.

I've never used an indoor trainer before, I typically just go to the gym and do some hard-core sweating on the stairmaster for 1/2 hr during the rainy season. For me, there's something about actually leaving the house to exercise that makes it easier to do. On some days, however, just getting out the door is the biggest challenge! It just depends...
