How do you mend a broken heart -- Name this puppy!
Hey, the last six weeks have been hellish, with Doug moving out and my good girl Buddy passing on.

But, lookee who showed up to lend a paw! We need a NAME here!

Bitter Appled all the wooden stuff and all the cords. Made a secure place in the kitchen (tile is easier to clean than wood), bought a gallon of Nature's Miracle. Got a pound of treats which will go in every pocket for the next coupla years.

She's not crying but Lablike, she's quietly scared and when awake, she moans a little bit. She's very young.

Mine's 13 and only beginning to show signs of slowing down. Of course, now he has arthritis and is deaf so I figure that has more to do with the slow down than his age. People kept telling me he'd slow down around 5. This was when he was 10. LOL.

Buddy was a Lab, too, then. Sorry, I didn't catch that earlier. Sorry for your loss but it looks like you have a beautiful babe now to help fill that hole in your heart.

122. Yeah, one day I was grading papers outside at school
and I looked around, and there were all these yellow dogs sleeping under the cafe tables. They looked so peaceful. So, I bought Buddy and she really was a very peaceful girl once she turned into a Lab -- that day when they know how to swim?

Buddy had arthritis and deafness, too. I was really glad she knew hand signals because when that happened, she couldn't be under voice control any more.

Buddy was mine but the whole family claimed her. My two grown sons cried when I told them she was gone. I expect they'll be over today to make much of the soon to be spoiled rotten Kid. :)

You sure got a sweet one.

Unfortunately, I went with voice commands for Beau. I'm now trying to teach sign language to a 13 y.o. dog. Good thing he's smart. :) Note to self: next time, hand signals.

My husband is already dreading the day we lose Beau. He was 'afraid' of him at first (was a cat guy) but last night he was wrecked because Beau wouldn't wake up. (Deaf dogs sleep really, really well. :) )

22. Sally of the Sawdust (1925) (Sally for short)
Cast: W.C. Fields, Carol Dempster, Alfred Lunt, Erville Alderson

Synopsis:
Acclaimed director D.W. Griffith (INTOLERANCE) took the helm of this silent version of the hit W.C. Fields stage play, and the result is an engaging blend of circus tomfoolery and typical Griffith-style family drama and class system indictment. Circus con man "Professor" Eustace McGargle (Fields) lovingly raises orphan Sally (Carol Dempster) as his own child amid the sawdust, elephants, hula girls, and shell games of the carnival, but when he sees she is becoming a young woman, he decides to unite her with her grandparents back in Connecticut.

as in the character in "Harry Potter".

Plus, you can call her Hermie, or Minny, or "Mudblood" (nasty slang for Muggles when she screws up-and she WILL screw up!)

Whatever you name her, enjoy your baby. A new puppy is the most fun in the world.

your floors will thank you, and it's only for a short time.

http://www.lucy-the-dog.com/weeweepads.html

And I thought for sure Kid was Caroline...

I have to tell you, I kept my puppy in my bed with me at night, and since it was a large bed, a wee wee pad on the bed... and when I felt her moving, I would wake up and place her on the pad on the floor to go. She only had one accident that made it onto the bedspread, and it was an old, easily washed one, so no biggie.

I can't stand locking up the babies away and alone at night. It makes me more sad than them. My girls still sleep in my bed of course!

Good luck, she's beautiful.

91. I really like Kid! Perfect!
I remember reading once long ago that dogs learn their name faster and recognize it forever after best, even in a crowd or whatever, if it's one syllable (or can be shortened to one or have one clearly emphasized) AND if it has a clear vowel sound.

I've thought of that every time I've named a dog since then and it's worked well for me. Mostly I try to let my animals "name themselves" with their behavior or appearance, but sometimes I get stuck too. Bebo, my current roomy, was riding home on my shoulder in the car, a mostly-chi mix who was six weeks old and truly scared, so I let him stay on my body for the whole ride home.

My other dog Sadie, a five-year-old border collie mix, was doing her usual frantic thing bouncing around in the car and also checking out her baby brother ... and I started calling him Baby Brother. That was too long, of course, and without even trying, I shortened it to B-Bro, and that somehow morphed into Bebo.

It's more than one syllable but he learned it almost immediately, so that's his name! :)

I do emphasis the BEE part of it, though, and of course he hears "Beebster" and just "Beeb" a lot.

His big sister Sadie was killed by a wild animal on July 4th last year, so Bebo is my "only child" now. He's a handful, though, and plenty of company and companionship for me. Turned out to be the smartest dog I've ever had (although I have said that about some previous ones).

I'm sooo happy for you, getting your new little Kid, and I know she'll continue to bring you loads of love and loyalty for a long time. Don't they just change your life, though? Always helped me to get my entire world into proper perspective to get a new puppy....

Mwah! for Kid -- she's too cute for words! :loveya:

144. How about Liberty or Patriot?"
How about a name to reflect our times?

149. To reflect our times it would be "Torture", "Gitmo" or "Pre-emptive War"

154. You're so right.
On the other hand, we could reflect the resistance:

Cindy, Hugo, Kennedy, Conyers (there's a good name!), Dennis, Noam, Greg . .

Skinner.

174. Abbott was named after Abbie Hoffman
But my cat is such a doofus that Abbott fits him so much better than Abbie.

153. Imho, the words "hero" and "patriot" are used much too often.
The Republicans are emptying them out of meaning.

Nationalism is a pretty blunt tool.

Do we really want to reflect these times? :(

157. Jesse.
I had a beautiful yellow lab just like him for 12 years whose name was Jesse. What a great dog he was.

I'm glad to see you have a little boost of puppy love to cheer you up. Personally, I thought about naming my new Boxer "Steve." I don't know why, but I always think it's funny when dogs have common human names. In the end, I found out that one of his previous owners (foster parent) had called him Spike, so I stuck with it.

Good luck with that beautiful puppy.

177. What a sweety! "Kid " is perfect!
So sorry to learn about your troubled times. (Me too, lost my oldest and best friend last week-suddenly-age 48. I sure could use a puppy, but my 11 year old beagle is doing just fine for me--she always knows.) Heartfelt good wishes to you, my friend. m.
