The RetroLounge Daily Poem Thread (Mon 10/2/06)
Vacationing With Sylvia Plath

Maybe I should have come alone.

Maybe if the clouds didnt resemble
tombstones and I had brought something
more upbeat to read
the ocean wouldnt seem so final
an ongoing thought carried to shore
then taken away,
washing the same green sock
over and over again.

Maybe if I was taking medication
or at least St. Johns Wort,
maybe if I had a chocolate bar
to eat between breakdowns
the seagulls cry would be more of a sigh
and the waves wouldnt seem so blue.

Maybe a lot of things. Maybe
if I could slip into Sylvias mind,
sort out the spices in her spice rack,
alphabetize them and dust them off.
Maybe then Id understand how
its the little things that pull you under.

Kelli Russell Agodon

1. What a wonderful poem
but exceedingly sad too. Far too many maybes . . . but then we all think this way at different points in our lives. Speculating as to what might have been.

4. Good morning, my dear Retro..........
Maybe then Id understand how
its the little things that pull you under

This is such a terrific poem........

But the lines that resonate the most for me .......

Are the ones quoted above...

For I have found that when I'm sad..........it is just as those tell it.

The little things ...........

Thank you.......

5. cool.
I didn't even read the title so I read the whole poem til I got to mention of her name without realizing it was about her. I don't think it was the little things that pulled her under at all...I sometimes wonder if she would have taken on the really big demons, explicitly, if she had lived, and what those poems would have been like.
