Weird things your pets eat?
Cider, my cat, loves mushrooms. If I drain a can of them he sits on the sink and hopes I'll turn away.

Misty, my baby dawg, loves bananas. If you're eating it she MUST have a bite. Just a little one. PLEEEASE?

6. My dog Aja loves most fruits and veggies.
Maybe not "weird" to most people but she is the first dog I have owned that likes this stuff. He favorites are broccoli, green beans, zucchini, summer squash. And she likes apples as long as they are not Granny Smith's or any other tart variety. :-)

I had a German Shepard years ago that loved olives. She would spit out the pit too!

One cat eats blueberries and tomatoes, the other has licked or eaten toilet paper, foil wrappers, dental floss, and one of those ant motels things (not all of it). They are weird.

When I was a kid we had a shepard mix who absolutely loved to eat shit. Dog, cow, cat, horse...he didn't care.

The bad thing was, he also liked "to give kisses."

first cat I've had that liked hot foods, either. Another cat I had years ago adored jalapenos as well as a whole list of other interesting foods.

I had a schnauzer who loved corn on the cob, sweet potatoes, cornbread, whole wheat bread, and okra.

21. A friend of mine once had a doberman puppy that they rushed to
the vet with a very distended and hard stomach. Initially, the vet suspected Parvo. As it turns out, my friend was having a swimming pool built at the time. The dog had consumed a considerable amount of gunite, which hardened in his stomach.

$700 of surgery later (this was the early 80s) the dog recovered.

Evie goes gonzo for strawberry and raspberry breakfast bars, as well as Kashi Strawberry Fields cereal. Plato likes to lick the plate when I have eggs. I usually use butter, so that's not that surprising :). Neutrino likes plain croissants. Her brother Quark licks the salt off tostadas.

25. My little furbaby?
She likes to steal crackers (I posted a pic in the kittens picture thread). She likes to lick the salt from tortilla chips. She sometimes likes to lick the bowl after I've eaten soy ice cream. One time, my boyfriend was over, eating cereal and soy milk on the sofa, and she started lapping the soy milk. She especially loves to try to steal food from my BF because she knows I won't put up with it. I think she like the taste of Earth Balance margarine because she'll sometimes eat bits of potato with it.

Every Christmas, he wants chunks of fruitcake. You wouldn't think a cat would ever eat that, but he does.

Also, he likes anything with tomato sauce or olive oil.

The cat I had as a kid loved chickpeas, avocados, and sweet potatoes.

41. Corn husks and green olives.
Edited on Mon Oct-02-06 10:07 PM by ocelot
This guy, the late great Big Orange Charles, would beg for corn husks whenever we shucked fresh sweet corn. He'd just munch them up. He also liked green olives (in fact, all my cats have enjoyed them), and would tear the plastic bags off loaves of bread and chew hunks out of them (the bread, not the plastic).

RIP - Charles, 1974-1995

42. Just as a warning, please do not let your animals eat grapes or raisins
Dogs and cats cannot digest these, and somehow they will have kidney failure. We did not know this, and our sweet Emma loved eating grapes. She died about 6 months ago from acute kidney failure. I would never want anyone else to go through what we did....

43. ... or significant quantities of raw or powdered onion or garlic
Edited on Tue Oct-03-06 02:43 AM by NorthernSpy
Cats and dogs who consume large-ish amounts of onions and garlic may develop hemolytic anemia as a result. That's when the red blood cells start to burst and die prematurely, resulting in a shortage of blood cells capable of transporting oxygen throughout the body. Small quantities of onions and garlic -- such as the amount used as a flavoring in spaghetti sauce or chili -- are not thought to be harmful to a pet who likes to have a dollop of these foods.

As for grapes and raisins, as little as 3 1/2 ounces of grapes or 1/2 ounce of raisins per 10 pounds of pet may be enough to harm the kidneys. Apparently, no one has figured out why.

I'm sorry about what happened to Emma, Lavenderdiva. Grapes seem like they would be perfectly harmless. Who would ever have imagined that they could hurt an animal?
