I saw Carlos Mencia on his "Punisher" tour in San Jose
Saturday night
DVD will be out at the end of October they said.
I've always been amazed that he got his own show on Comedy central because his humor is so "West Coast." Notwithstanding, his genius is his particular brand of satire, almost pedagogical, pan-racial and ultra stereotypic.

Dave Chappell is funny but parochial. Carlos' humor runs wide and deep, especailly if you're familiar with his terrain.

In making of fun of the disabled he humanizes them.
In playing to the most repressed prejudices, he disarms them.

The Punisher Tour show that I saw was not as good as he can be. It was overly sophomoric/ sexual joke oriented (a tad base if you will). Still very funny. "....my dream is to open a nail salon.....in Vietnam..... and everyone has to speak English." If you're not from California and certain other places, you won't understand why it's hilarious.

His best work really is the tv show where he can edit and massage the humor for most efficacy.

1. I find him highly offensive.
And not funny in the least.

2. I'm torn
I don't know what to think. I suspect he's kind of a freeper in some ways, with what he said about Kanye West.

He's like Sarah Silverman or Lisa Lampanellie to me, half the time I'm going 'wtf' even though there might be a chuckle here and there.

4. I don't like the guy.. He's no Richard Pryor
Pryor could pull off the offensive stuff. This guy is just a pig.

Sorry, but I'll pass on him.

5. I like him and CHAPPELLE
He gets nothing but negative responses here. But it's a biting kind of thing. (Truth)

6. I bet every single Mencia hater in NOT from California
or the southwest. There's just no way you'd get him otherwise. So again, I maintain my amazement that he got and keeps his gig on Comedy Central. And no, he's no freeper in the same way Stephen Colbert is no freeper.

9. You would be wrong
Nini, a few posts above, and myself, are native Californians.

And I for one maintain that he is still a hackneyed mediocrity, somewhere on the idiot comedian spectrum between Andrew 'Dice' Clay and Jeff Foxworthy. :puke:

11. True dat. I would not be so anti-Menica if he wasn't pushed so hard
on TV. Kind of like that obnoxious country comedian who does his routine with a glass of scotch.

10. Don't make it a Cali thing Whenever Ned Holdness (his real name) comes
on the tube, I change the channel quick and I'm from Cali. He's pretty rude, mean spirited and obnoxious with not enough pay off for me. At least when Chapelle goes there, he gets "deep" anddoes it with a twinkle in his eye that makes you still love him. Mencia's success confounds me.

12. Is Texas southwest enough for you?
There are plenty of Hispanic comics I like (Pablo Francisco is hilarious, without pointing and laughing at handicapped people).

Mencia is not funny.

7. Did he do any material he didn't steal from other comics?
I've heard he's notorius for that sort of thing.

He's not really my bag either way, but some of my friends dig him.
