Who needs to barf after surgery?

Why can't that be cured?

(I spent the day in the hospital watching my 10 year old barf into a bag following a cystoscopy.)

Poor fella.

My mother was legendary in her post-op sickness. She would spend days vomiting.

1. I told the dr. last time I went in and they gave me 3 different drugs
It worked like a charm and I wasn't sick at all. The trick is to make sure they know ahead of time.

It is the worst feeling though.

4. Antiemetics or not, there are no guarantees.
If we could figure out a way to guarantee people wouldn't have postop nausea, we'd do it for everyone and no one would have the problem.

All we can do is try and reduce risk.

5. Considering not all peole experience post-op nausea...
it's not always necessary to attempt to prevent it.

All I was saying that when I told the doc up front he did what he could to avoid it and it worked. If I hadn't said anything I surely would have been sick.

2. Poor kid. Hope he's feeling better soon. A sick kid is heartbreaking.

3. Sorry your kiddo is sick. :(
When I woke up after my cholecystectomy, I remarked to the recovery room nurse how good I felt. She told me that the anesthesiologist made sure I had sufficient anti-nausea medicine. It was at that moment that I fell in love with him.

I hope your kid is feeling better soon!

6. Thanks, everyone, for your kind replies.
I wish I had alerted the docs ahead of time, but who really knows how a person will react after surgery the first time?

My boy is doing better now. Sleeping and his pain is greatly diminished.

You all are very kind people.

7. Those guys that went to the Moon were puking the whole way.
Bad analogy. ;)
