Though her publicist denied the story late Wednesday, Reuters reported the adoption took place.

The 48-year-old pop star arrived with a group of people in Lilongwe, the Malawian capital, by private plane on Wednesday. A motorcade whisked them to an unknown location, where the mother of two reportedly picked a one-year-old boy from a dozen pre-selected children.

A government spokesperson claims Madonna had asked officials to choose boys only. They were from four orphanages in the city, according to Adrina Michiela.

The African nation is said to have waived its rules about non-resident adoptions for Madonna.

Madonna also vowed to spend at least $3 million (U.S.) on programs for orphans in Malawi and will finance a documentary about the country's plight.
