Here's why: His last half season as a Mariner, he PURPOSELY pitched like shit to force a trade. Notice how he INSTANTLY improved when he went to Houston, and then NEXT YEAR he won a Cy Young with Arizona! It was unprofessional and arrogant beyond the normal jock arc.
As much as I despise Pay-rod, he gave 100% right up until his last play, so compared to Johnson, he isn't so bad. :D

at the time, I would have greatly sacrificed Grifey to keep Johnson in Seattle, but after the post season of 96, I figured Randy would try his hardest to get the hell out...

19. A-Rod worked pretty hard for Texas too |
|
problem is, they were unfortunate enough to be playing in a division with 3 very powerful teams.

going on and on about how they crankees "eat Rogers alive" kind of crap. I laughed watching Giambi (`roid freak) Posada (done) and Matsui (not what he was) strike out in the 9th. This is the best team money can buy?

13. Wonder if he was the same place Frank Thomas has been |
|
the last six years.
He didn't do anything for the Sox, just took his very large paychecks and sucked, horribly.
Maybe getting his job taken by Konerko, being completely replaced as DH, and getting his salary severly knocked back made him realize what a tool he was being.

14. I don't think Torre is overrated... |
|
I think he's players are...when the Yanks were winning WS titles, he had lesser talented teams....with Paul O'Neil, Brosious and what not, he had to work harder to win games...but with a lineup like the Yanks have had the past 5 years, how can you place blame on the manager? The lineup is top notch, and has been for a while...the players are just choke artist, except Jeter, I give respect to Jeter...he has earned that from me at least.

17. Because its the managers job to not only get them playing well |
|
but to come up with some kind of strategy to win games.
You watch the Yankees, and there never seems to be any overall scheme or plan going on.
In game one, for example, they had Giambi steal a base for pretty much no reason with two outs.
Torre has never had a bad team in NY. Those WS he did win could have been done by anyone on autopilot.
And look at their pitching. Powerful starters, then you bring in three or four guys from your bullpen to lock down the offense until they can bring in Rivera to clean up.
That's it.
A monkey could do that.
Imagine if Torre were stuck managing a team like the Marlins.
They had a $12 million payroll, and still managed to finish just under 500 and were within reach of a wild card.
And despite their slump off at the end of the season, they managed to win more games than seven other NL teams.
Now that's a manager. Joe Girardi lost his job, but I think he might be getting some calls...

20. I can see your point... |
|
but the teams Torre won the WS with, took skill...the lineups Torre has had for the last 5yrs plus, ...damn, its like Phil Jackson coaching IMO...with Kobe/shaq, or Jordan/Pippen...it doens't take a genius to win...but what Torre did in the late 90's, took talent on his part..no way, should the Braves have lost twice to the Yanks...the Braves had more talent, but the NYY overcame...nowdays? How do you coach a team like the Yanks? Good god, the Yanks, are like 9 effing Jordans on your team...I place blame on the players, not Torre...

22. yeah, I can understand that... |
|
but with the talent that the Yanks have, how can you make them work together? Phil Jackson had to shuffle four talents around, Jordan, Pippen, Kujoc, and Rodman...Torre has...9 bonafide allstars(no bench included) to deal with...if I was Torre I would coach the same way...meaning, let them play...with that talent, I can only blame that talent for choking, not the coach...

If he doesn't know how to take Championships with the group he has now, then get in someone who will.
Problem is, he is a NY institution.
Oh well

the only coaching move I would do, is take out payrod(cause he sucks in the playoffs)...what would you recommend? :) This is fun...:hi:

25. The lineup is a big part of the problem |
|
but I don't know if changing it will do much.
He changed today and it didn't increase scoring. Then again, sounds like Rogers was unhittable.
Funny think about the Yanks is that losing a player isn't a big deal for them in the playoffs.
The very fact that he could consider pulling someone like Sheffield for Williams is a luxury many managers can't even imagine.

If you were Torre then, what would you do, to increase your odds of winning? It seems like we are in agreement, when it comes to the Badassness of the Yan k lineup...but it seems that you might place a degree of responsibility on Torre for the loss...and I wouldn't put any on him, because its up to the players to perform...I don't think I can make a better batting order on my mlb ps2 game, than what the Yanks have at present...I just don't see how Torree can be held responsible for a loss...is all.

True, the players aren't blameless. They have performed poorly.
But he has to pull them back up.
Hopefully he doesn't. I enjoy watching them struggle
