2. Probably are...
it would take several years of teaching to collect that many - but there are class clowns who (when stuck) will go for a humorous answer in the hopes of getting a few pity points.

That reminds of a french test my brother took when he was around 15-16 years old. He had to answer some questions but there was one question he had no idea what to write. So he wrote "That's a difficult question. I don't know!" in french and got 1 out of 3 points or something like that.
I couldn't stop laughing and still years later, we laugh about that.

I have to say though that it was a pretty young teacher who knew that my brother had problems in french and whenever my brother did well, he never failed to encourage him.

6. I once had a student
who rarely attended physics class. On a physics test, she couldn't remember the formula she needed but ended up doing the approximations that are taught in calculus as the first step in learning integration. She wasn't in calculus at the time, and it wasn't in her physics textbook. I gave her the maximum credit on that problem.

Unfortunately, she failed the rest of the test miserably (basically didn't do anything) - and dropped out of school shortly thereafter. The loss of that wonderful mind has always saddened me. I expect your brother didn't have a mind for French like her mind worked with math, but I certainly would have appreciated his effort to do something other than just blow off the question he couldn't answer.
