Coolest concert moment

I have two of them. Back in the seventies we had a concert a month, or so it seemed. And I knew a local promoter. Anyway, I partied with a member of ZZ Top, and boy does he drink a lot. But the two strangest, and coolest moments, I ever saw were when a band called T-Rex was playing and a light boom started falling. The band was looking up and saying oh no or something like that, but Marc Bolan just kept on playing without missing a beat. The light ended up on a wire and the show went on.
Another really interesting, if stupid, moment occured when some moron tossed a firecracker on stage during an inside concert by Frankie Marino and Mahogany Rush. Frankie was visibly startled but got a shit eating grin on his face, gave a thumbs up, and played on. The firecracker thrower was escorted out. The show went on. Long live Mahogany Rush. Strange Universe indeed.
One more. I was there at Alpine Valley for Stevie Ray's last jam. None of us knew it at at the time of course, but what a jam it was!!!!!!!!!! SRV, Clapton, Robert Cray, Mr. Buddy Guy, Jimmie Vaughan, incredible!

1. When Live Aid was happening, Chrissie Hynde had had The Pretenders

on hiatus for a year or two for maternity leave, so they did a tuneup show at the Chestnut Cabaret in Philadelphia. It was just a straight "we haven't played together in a long time, let's just do all our hits" show. The only song I didn't know was "Up the Neck" from the first album (we tracked it down after the show) which has since become a favorite.

I was just happy, even awed, to be there, but Mike and Tommy fought their way to right in front of the stage. After the show, Tommy said, "Chrissie sweated on me!"

(There was another Mike and Tommy Chestnut Cabaret story, something about Mike more or less goosing Nona Hendryx, but I wasn't present for that one, nor do I approve.)

3. The Boomtown Rats farewell gig...

...at the Great Hall in my London college. Geldof really belted out the classics and I had bruised ribs for two weeks after being in the moshpit.

I nearly saw Gary Glitter once two, but he was apparently so drunk he fell over while trying to climb onstage in his platform shoes and broke his leg. All we heard was a squeal and a crash, then some swearing before his radio mike was turned off. That's about as good as a Gary Glitter concert could be, really.

6. LOL! Oh yes, he's a paedo from way back...

...but this was before his first arrest in the UK for having kiddie porn on his PC when he took it into the shop to be repaired.

At the time I (nearly) saw him, he was a sort of kitsch icon, someone people went to see just so they could say how tacky the whole experience had been. He always was a parody of himself (as well as the whole glamrock scene), but his songs now have an added element of irony in light of his paedophilic activities in the UK, Cuba, Cambodia and Vietnam. It's hard to think of "D'ya Wanna Be in My Gang?" and "Leader of the Pack" these days without cringing.

5. At the beginning of the Concert for Bangladesh when the hippies...

wildly applauded for the tuning of the instruments before Ravi Shankar's act, and he told them "Since you have so much enjoyed the tuning of our instruments, I hope you enjoy the playing on!"

9. When the walls of the Chicago Theater looked like they were bleeding

during "Papa Won't Leave You Henry," at the Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds concert in 2002. ("Mercy Seat," from that show, is probably my favorite concert performance of all time, but the combination of song and setting during "Henry" was the coolest individual moment.)
