Is Virginia in the south?
I think it is and a certain DUer, who is lost in Virginia, is so lost that she doesn't even recognize that she is in the south.

She is clearly not lost in the mid-Atlantic.

39. I think PA is anything west of Hackettsown, NJ.
Basically, I want to give Warren & Sussex counties to PA. And make South Jersey a seperate state from North Jersey, since it really is totally different.

And have been talking about seceding ever since I was a toddler.

I grew up thinking anything north of Camden was North Jersey.

43. New Brunswick is the demarcation line (and I'm being generous)
Central Jersey always claims to be north Jersey and we always have to inform them they're south Jersey.

I know where Panther Valley is. I lived in Hackettstown for a year and a half. The only thing I liked about that town was Greene's Beans on Rt. 517 (and the owner is a rare liberal).

Speaking as a Mainiac, your friend must have gone outdoors in February without a hat (brain frostbite) to think that.

Virginia is the South, though. There are a few pockets that feel more Northern than Southern but as a state it's definitely in Dixie, LostinMidAtlantic.

VA is a Mid-Atlantic state, not the South... and that from Charlottesville north, the huge majority isn't even part of "The South." It has a much more NE mentality.

Glad the North won and everything, but the Confederacy made some real blunders and their defense of Virginia at all costs was one of them.

12. Well, sorta (IMHO)
I grew up in NC and GA, so I know "South". I lived in Richmond VA a couple years, and it's definitely in the South. Sickeningly so, in fact.

But Arlington VA and the other DC suburbs didn't feel at all like the South.

So I'd say "the southern part of Virginia", yes, but "Northern Virginia", no.

And, I'll say it again re: the later: from Charlottesville north, most of it isn't even of the South.

From the Wiki article: In recent years, the popular usage has also included the Baltimore-Washington Metropolitan Area with the growing economic integration of that region into the Northeast Corridor.

68. Culture vs. geography; which are we talking about?
Much of Virginia is definitely the South. I would call the Eastern shore of Maryland the South. Most of the Virginia part of the DC suburbs, I would not call the South.

Geography really doesn't mean much. Part of Virginia are as Southern as a place can be.

And it's not as if I hold it against you that people who lived in your state 200 years ago owned slaves

But seriously, seeing as an entire state broke off from virginia in order to not be part of the "south"...

102. No, what YOU said is
Being a Confederate state over 100 years again doesn't make Virginia geographically a Southern state -- because it's not. And, anyone who lives here knows that VA is as much -- or -- more -- "Yankee" as it is "Southern."

I don't care about geography nor suggested I was making a geographic argument. I was an American history major, so I tend to dwell on that kind of stuff.

But seriously, I think the most important thing to be thankful for is that you don't live in West Virginia, right?

116. Maybe.
Fact is i live in N.C., and we are a more liberal minded state than Va. Infact we are known as the most liberal of all the Southern states. So i guess that makes us not Southern, or less Southern?

I see Va, and Nc as South, just not "Deep South".

117. but is the Civil War over yet in Virginia?
Lee-Jackson-King Day

wherein Martin Luther King's birthday also commemorated Robert E. Lee, and Stonewall Jackson.

Figure that out!

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lee-Jackson-King_Day

The incongruous nature of the holiday, which simultaneously celebrated the lives of Confederate generals and a civil rights icon, did not escape the notice of Virginia lawmakers. Legislators protested the holiday by waving pictures of Jesse Jackson, Spike Lee, and Martin Luther King, Jr. around the state capitol. In 2000, Virginia Governor Jim Gilmore proposed splitting Lee-Jackson-King Day into two separate holidays, with Lee-Jackson Day to be celebrated the Friday before what would become Martin Luther King Day. The measure was approved and the two holidays are now celebrated separately.

107. Actual conversation prior to our Big Dysfunctional Brady Bunch Trip:
My sisters were 17, 17 and 20 at the time. I was the only legal one.

Mom: You girls can all drink in Hawaii.
Katie: No, we can't.
Mom: Yeah, because it's an island.
Katie: It's a state.
Mom: It's an island. Islands don't have drinking ages.
Katie: Yeah, but it's a state. You have to be 21.
Mom: But it's an island.

(it continued on for awhile longer)

My mother was then seriously surprised when we arrived in Hawaii and I was the only daughter who could purchase alcohol.
