I need help making a Halloween mask for my son - Anubis
he wants to be Anubis...the Egyptian god.

He has Aspergers and one of his interests is Anubis.

So...I can make the entire costume easily...but the mask part. I wanna make one rather than buy one because the only place I found had a very scary mask that doesn't look "right" to my kid.

So any ideas on how to approach this??

1. I love this subject line!
I thought your kid was named Anubis. Strange name for a kid, I thought. :spray:

3. paper mache masks
Edited on Tue Oct-10-06 11:19 AM by AutumnMist
work great. You can go and buy a cheap "face" mold at some craft supply stores to put the paper mache over, or you can blow up a balloon and then put the paper mache over it. It can be fun for your son if he is fascinated with egypt. Maybe like making a mummy mask with the strips for the God mask? Here are some links. I hope this helps! Good Luck!

P.S. You can use regular white school glue mixed with water for the paste. Paper mache glue tends to be more expensive. Use the newspaper to make a nose, ears, etc. It works great and you can paint it when it dries. :)

edit: Use newspaper for the paper strips as well. Its a great way to use up sundays paper. LOL

5. perhaps the balloon idea is the way to go..
I can then start with just covering it and then add the ears and build up the nose for the mask...

I will then add a fabric egyptian headdress to it...

8. My son was Anubis LAST year.....
Here's what I did (going from memory here):

I used foam rubber to cut the "muzzle" then covered it with black felt. Then I sewed it to the "mask" part (also cut from black felt) which had the ears and eyeholes..... That was all sewed onto the "headcloth" part. We used gold foil paper and glued it for the mouth, around the eyes, and in the ears for the accents. An elastic band to hold it on...

Is he prepared for the fact that no one will know what he is - even AFTER he tells them!?! (sigh)

He used a Ankh cut from cardboard attached to paper towel holder covered in gold foil for his scepter. A "breastplate" cut from cardboard and colored. A linen skirt from Goodwill. A belt from the same material as the headcloth.

11. I bet there's a Egyptian-type web site with a cut out of some sort

that's pretty cool.

Or, you could print out a color picture and paste or put it on a mask, somehow.

my husband would have loved to make something like this - he's an artist who loves Egyptian gods... meanwhile, my son could care less about a costume. He used to be obsessive about it and now he's just indifferent.
