The news on my sister's leg is not good
Sis was down here in Boston yesterday seeing doctor #3 for her leg.

(To recap quickly, she fell off a ladder in early May, breaking both of the bones in her leg in two (one was a compound fracture) and shattering her ankle.)

She has a full-blown infection of the leg, including the bone. She has really just 2 options at this point and they both SUCK. Remember that before this accident my sis was a very active person, working out > 2 hrs. every day.

1) treat the infection (it will take at least 3 months) and then fuse the two bones in her leg together. It will be at least 6 months before she will get into physical therapy and the mobility prognosis is not good: no movement in the ankle at all.

2) amputate the leg below the knee. A prosthetic will give her more mobility, but she will not have her leg.

Of course, it's her decision to make, but "sucks" and "sucks" more are lousy options. I'm hurting so much for her right now that I don't quite know how to handle it (and that's just me, I imagine she's got it so much worse.)

Please keep her in your thoughts and prayers. She's a very strong person, but even strong people need a shoulder.

3. I'm sorry, but I'm going to suggest

that she get the fusion----I've had the fusion done,
and even though I've lost the mobility in my ankle
I get around just as much now as I did before my accident. The most difficult
part of losing mobility and range of motion is when you have to walk on very uneven surfaces, such as cobblestones.

It's really not so bad.

I wish her good luck.

4. I'm so sorry MissMillie
 for you and your sister. She has been through so much already. While it is her decision, of course, I hope she chooses the first option.

5. I'm very sorry.
Option 1 sounds like it's going to be the painful option, but best in the long run.

I'm very sorry that your sister has to go through this. I hope the infection isn't causing other problems.

8. Oh no...you're right, neither is a good option
But, if there is a chance, however remote, I hope she'll be able to fight to save her leg.

I wish her all the best. Here are hugs for both of you..
