Best use of Pedal Steel Guitar in any genre by any artist?
Would it be the ambient stuff Bruce Kaphan did?

Would it be the sublime way Elton John and Steely Dan worked it into their works?

Would it be the trippy way used on Dark Side of the Moon?

Would it be the meditative Hawaiian style?

Or would it be the traditional Country Way used by a C&W artist?

Cite both example and performer ;)

1. Russ Hicks - Ween's 12 Golden Country Hits
Edited on Fri Oct-13-06 03:55 PM by MrCoffee
pure old-skool CW guitar and utterly self-depricating and hilarious.

16. Just d/l'ed it - it is good
I had Guava and a bunch o'other Ween...but never this one...I kind of wrote it off as a 'joke' album, but it's joke is that it's suprisingly excellent.

3. Lloyd Green on Johnny Paycheck's 60s "Little Darlin'" records
Edited on Fri Oct-13-06 04:30 PM by blitzen
"Lloyd Green has one of the very few completely recognizable, original styles in the world of steel guitar. His solos are always beautifully constructed masterpieces, whether only a few bars long or the length of a full instrumental piece. His sound is always unique and thought provoking to his fellow steel players, his solo instrumental projects always remain fresh even to the most jaded steel aficionado's ear, and he never fails to inspire and impress all listeners and players alike."

Here's the Paycheck stuff on which Green really shines

http://www.amazon.com/Real-Mr-Heartache-Little-Darlin/dp/B000000QJA/sr=1-10/qid=1160774863/ref=sr_1_10/002-3637248-7743228?ie=UTF8&s=music

"If anything, Lloyd Green deserves equal billing with Johnny Paycheck and Aubrey Mayhew for the artistry of the Little Darlin' material. It is impossible to imagine anyone else contributing what this man does to each and every song, making the good ones great and the great ones deserving of the same praise we regularly give the best work of Haggard, Jones, Nelson, Cash and Hank Williams, Sr."

4. For sheer energy and excitement, it is hard to beat Robert Randolph.
He is the most exciting pedal steel player I have seen in a while. I am also very partial to the use of the instrument in King Sunny Ade's juju music.

7. Nobody beats David Gilmore and his steel guitaring
That is funny you added Hawaiian style. When I was a kid I played dark side of the moon in the kitchen at work a few times. I went awhile without playing it and this girl comes up and asks,"Could you play that tape that starts off with Hawaiian music?"

13. I can't pick a "best," but that would be in the Top Ten
And there's one particular spot in there where he kicks out the Ultimate Power Chord - it's the loudest one in the song. Audio nirvana.

9. The guy who played pedal steel for Pure Prairie Leage
The original band on their Harvest album, I think his name is Mike McCall, that guy played a mean pedal steel.

11. Eric Clapton - Tears in Heaven
A beautiful solo, IMO.

I grew up playing pedal steel. My father owns the last steel guitar made by the legendary Zane Beck, completed just days before he died.

12. Rolling Stones No Expectations
Unless that guitar isn't pedal steel in which case I'm an idiot. I haven't listened to every steel guitar performance so I have no idea is this is the best one, it's just one I like a lot.
