Just called the cops in protest of richies and their fireworks.
They had a permit, but I made it clear to the cops that it was disturbing both to me and my dogs and cats. Sounded like war, and I didn't like it. Hmmmmf. Fuck a bunch of fireworks! I think I'll file a complaint with the City. It's not 4th of July. And I'm crotchety tonight. Teehee.

4. Nope no holiday. Richies do it up in a big way, but I'm sick of
them. And I don't like to be reminded of war in my own damn neighborhood. Bad enough men and women are dying for lies in this war without end. I don't need their crappy way of celebrating whatever it is they're celebrating. And apparently, God doesn't like it either. He just started pouring rain.

Bad Juju = bad magic, or bad luck. But, again, my bad. I missed the part referring to the dogs. Dur!

Let me ask you a question. You are working in a nursing home. The doctor says that "Mary Lou" can't have cigarettes, and her family concurs--Mary Lou has COPD. Now Mary Lou is a grown ass woman with 10 great grandchildren, is cognatively aware, and wants a damn cigarette. What do you do? Me, I give her a damn cigarette.

Life is a journey. I really don't have the energy to pass judgement on everyone that I come across.

44. You called the cops on little kids having a party? And doing fireworks?
An hour of your life and you have to call the cops on a legal and permitted event?

And, it's an hour that barely effects you.

All you had to do was look out your window and enjoy the free show.

My dogs don't mind fireworks at all.

And calling them "richie" kids? What's wrong with someone being more affluent? They went through the process, got permits, spent money they earned honestly.. and they're KIDS.

You need to lighten up.

63. Fireworks aren't bombs, they're art actually. The spectacular displays
created with fireworks are amazing and date back thousands of years to the chinese.

Some of my favorite memories of group events are with fireworks... the 4th of July before I left I went down to Inglewood and bought $300 worth of fireworks and our whole neighborhood turned out with theirs too. We lit up the street for hours, having wine, sharing stories and being neighbors for the last time.

It would have been more enjoyable for you to have appreciated the show instead of getting all upset over it. Life is short... enjoy beauty and unexpected pleasures whenever they come your way.

spend most of their time worrying about how to get money out of the other guy's pocket. And the fireworks were just a bunch of noise, nothing for anyone to see, move along type of display. Just for local richies, ground display.

84. well, consider the following:
Fireworks are credited with being invented in China over 2000 years ago.

Meanwhile, the earliest and most practical "bomb", a cannon ball or any other expolsive projectile, didn't even see its first and crudest appearance until sometime around 1300, it is estimated.

Fireworks are not the same as bombs. They are for asthetic purposes, not destructive ones. Just because they both use gunpowder doesn't mean they're the same thing. It's not like they're sitting over there with one arm around their kid say, "y'know son, the real bombs *kill* people, ain't that great?"

Fireworks symbolize the very thing that is killing our men and women for lies and I'm sick of subtle confirmation of fucking war. Richies think it's ok, and I don't. No. They are not blatant as you suggest and probably never even give the subtleties of acceptance of war a thought, but I have and this is part of my thinking now. That's a new one. One can get a permit to blow up the neighborhood for any party time?

Until my neighbors moved, I was continually wondering when they would burn down my house with their fireworks. Used to find the spent casings all over my roof and yard. Not pleasant!

The only time I called the cops on my neighbor (a different one) was because of a 'Foley.'

was the damage? Houses leveled? Windows blown out? What are you going to do in January when your neighbor that may make more money than you (richie Rich) buys the biggest flat screen TV possible and invites 50 of his closest friends over for the Superbowl? Call the cops because your water pressure drops during commercials, or the smell of chicken wings is overwhelming and making your dogs drule?

morally equivalent to Blackbeard the pirate. Not to mention that anyone who displays a paper skeleton in the yard for Halloween is exactly the same as a grave-robbing necrophiliac...

82. We shoot our illegal fireworks off straight over our boats.
When we're done, we usually get on those boats and head to Rhode Island for ice cream. One of these days, we're going to commandeer a yacht in Watch Hill and shoot fireworks off from it. Just so we can be unibomber-lovin' pirates.

Damn straight.

76. One thing I can say about the South - they are not afraid of fireworks
I grew up in SC - we used to have firecracker and bottle rocket fights all the time. No harm done, just a hell of a lot of fun. Moved up north and eventually to CA - total wusses about fireworks. I threw a firecracker in a twinky at my college roomate (in MA) and he seriously thought I was trying to kill him. Shit, I've had them blow up in my hand with no problem. M-80s and higher grade stuff are a different story - you need to be careful.

118. No kidding--same with me in Mississippi.
We used to have Roman Candle wars. And treehouse wars--one group would get in the treehouse and plug up all the holes, and the other would try to throw fireworks into the treehouse. I was a master at it. I used to pull the blades off spinners and stick them through a hole and light them. Or pull the stem off bottle rockets and do it. You could hear them screaming in there, banging around, then a loud pop. Usually a few bad words followed... Ah, good times. My poor kids think fireworks are dangerous bad things. Sad.

131. No, but I do find it pretty irrelevant to your original point.
Edited on Mon Oct-16-06 02:19 AM by primate1
A war veteran would make the association because of the similar sound, etc. Even then, it's not an association that's inherent to fireworks. I'd be willing to bet you could find plenty of veterans who enjoy fireworks.

A kid, as was your original argument, isn't going to make that association unless they're specifically told that fireworks represent bombs (which I would be willing to bet they don't to a vast majority of people).

If you were a veteran and you complained about it because it was causing you mental distress, you'd have a valid point. Your complaint, however, seems to be based on a hatred of "richies" and an arbitrary association to war that you've given fireworks. Like I said before, were these people shouting "TAKE THAT IRAQI VILLAGERS!!!" as the fireworks went off? My guess is they were saying "look at the pretty colours" to the kids.

Christ, it's 4:45 AM, why the hell am I still up arguing this shit with you?

Then perhaps rather than acting like a child and whining about richies and kids being indoctrinated to war via fireworks, you shold have said that as a veteran it was causing you mental distress. That way you wouldn't have come off as a total nutjob who just has a vendetta against people who are a little more affluent than you.

And I'd like to make an addendum to my commentary about kids being indoctrinated to love war via fireworks: If their family is teaching them that fireworks represent war and that war is a good thing, thy're probably going to be taught that war is a good thing with or without the fireworks.

I know a lot of latinos who love to shoot off fireworks on Christmas, New Years, after weddings, quinceaneras, for just about any reason...

138. You are an angry person...
Well, from what I can piece together from your ill-constructed and poorly thought out posts anyway.

You don't seem to have an actual basis for any of your arguments. And when it comes down to it, you don't really need one. Fireworks annoy you, and that is fine. "Rich" people bother you, and that is fine (although you sound as ignorant and hateful as any skinhead when you label, slander, stereotype and demonize and entire group of people). Hate on these things/people as much as you like - but you come off looking like the morality police in office when you call the cops on people who are doing perfectly legal and harmless things over your own pet peeves. Perhaps you would like to compare a barbeque to the crematoreums at Auschwitz?

Since you say you have served, you know better than anyone that war veterans are individuals and will invariably come up with a variety of opinions on any given issue. When you say things like "ask the veterans missing limbs and eyes and guts how they feel about fireworks" it doesn't unfortunately mean anything, because you will get many different responses from many different people.
