HELP! Whats the best anti-virus/spyware software on the market?
I have been using zonealarm security suite for the past few years but they want 35 dollars this year to renew the license. The firewall component doesn't work well with my satellite Internet connection- it slows it down to a crawl. I think I would be better off using the windows firewall and an independent anti-virus/spyware program.

Suggestions?

1. Best, I'm told is NOD32
free 30-day trial, as I recall, then $20 or $30. You can find it at Download.com. Other suggestions here: http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_topic&forum=105&topic_id=5218048#5218158
including some helpful ones in other replies, as well as the usual "Get a Mac!" foolishness.

2. I use
Windows firewall and AVG free edition and <knock wood> haven't ever had any problems. I'm in a cable/wifi connection. Used to have Zone Alarm and it didn't always play well with other programs.

6. Spybot - Search & Destroy is 100% free and very highly rated
Edited on Sat Oct-14-06 11:14 AM by DaveTheWave
No trial period, it's totally free for life but if you can send these folks a donation, any amount, it helps. Bandwidth and servers aren't cheap and these folks help protect millions of users around the world free. It never hurts to use several security programs as there's never a total "one-for-all" solution and Spybot-S&D has never conflicted with any other security programs that I use.

I've used it for over three years.

8. Sbybot with ad-aware
Both excellant.both free.
Ad-aware catches stuff that Spybot misses.

Beware of sound alikes though. There are others out there who play off their names and are actually spyware themselves. Also visit amazingtechs.com for plenty of advice for security issues.

11. I use Spy Sweeper too on my work computer
And it's the one that's online the most frequently. It's a little pricey at first but it's an excellent program well worth it. The updates if you purchase them early are about half price as the initial subscription cost.

10. Ad-aware is a great program and it is also free
I ran mine this morning but I paid $10 for the pro edition years ago when lifetime updates were free.
