What is the term for your grandmother's sister's son's granddaughter? |
|
(I just had a family dinner with people I'd not seen for twelve years and I'm trying to figure out exactly how we're related).

...I think a sister of your grandmother is called a great aunt. Her son would be your uncle then. And uncles' offspring are called cousins. So, I think they are a 2nd cousin. But, I'm not a genealogist.

6. The son/daughter of a great-aunt/uncle is |
|
a first cousin once removed.
The offspring of a first cousin once removed is a second cousin.
First cousins have grandparents in common.
Second cousins have great-grandparents in common.
If someone has a parent who is a sibling of your grandparent, they are your first cousin once removed.

13. Try working it out with a diagram (edited) |

These terms are all from the point of view of "you." The horizontal lines indicate sibling relationships, and the vertical connect generations. The asterisks are simply place holders, added on edit, because I can't tab properly.
great-grandparent---------------------------------------------------------great-great aunt/uncle | *********************************************************************** | grandparent--------------------great aunt/uncle **********************third cousin twice removed | *******************************************| *************************************| parent-----aunt/uncle **********first cousin once removed ***************** third cousin once removed |**************** | ************************* | ******************************************** | you******* first cousin*****************second cousin****************************** third cousin |**************** | *************************** |********************************************** | your child****first cousin once removed *** second cousin once removed******** third cousin once removed |********************** |************************** |********************************************| your g'child****first cousin twice removed*** second cousin twice removed ******* third cousin twice removed
You share a grandparent with your cousin, a great-grandparent with your second cousin, and a great-great grandparent with your third cousin.

2. Second cousin, once removed |
|
The shared ancestor is your great-grandparent, which makes you second cousins. The person you dined with is the great-great-granddaughter of the shared ancestor (you are one generation apart), which gives one remove...

5. Wow, that's good. I knew it was |

cousin but didn't know exactly how removed. I always get mixed up with that part.:)

3. Your grandmother's sister would be |
|
your great aunt. So her son's granddaughter would be a distant cousin.

9. Your second cousin, I think. |
|
Your grandmother's sister is your great aunt. Her son would be your uncle. His child would be your cousin and that cousin's kid would be your second cousin. I think it's your second cousin.

It's legal. Wasn't that the real question?}(
:hide:
Second cousin once removed is correct under the rules most genealogists use.

|
Edited on Sat Oct-14-06 11:08 PM by Katina
your grandmother's sister was your great aunt. Her son/daughter was your parent's 1st cousin. That person would be your 1st cousin once removed. Any children they have would be your second cousin. So any children they had would be your 2nd cousin, once removed
