I mean, I understand that being nominated is an honor in and of itself, but I was really looking forward to having some new business cards made up with "Saint" in front of my name. Guess I'll have to campaign harder the next time.

Pope Benedict XVI arrives in St. Peter's square at the Vatican for canonization ceremony of four new saints

Pope Proclaims Four New Saints, Including Indiana Nun

Sunday, October 15, 2006

VATICAN CITY — Pope Benedict XVI gave Catholics four new saints Sunday, bestowing the honor on a 19th-century nun who struggled on the American frontier, a bishop who tended to the wounded during the Mexican Revolution and two Italian clergy.

French-born Mother Theodore Guerin endured harsh conditions on the American frontier and resisted the objections of a local bishop in pursuing her dream of establishing Catholic education for pioneers. She established a college for women in Indiana, which enrolled its first student in 1841.

Among those at the ceremony on the steps of St. Peter's Basilica were ailing Chicago Cardinal Francis George and five Indiana churchmen. George, who is recovering from cancer surgery, flew to Rome with hundreds of alumnae, trustees and students of St. Mary-of-the-Woods College in Indiana.

"The Church rejoices in the four new saints," Benedict told a crowd of several thousand at the end of the two-hour ceremony. "May their example inspire us and their prayers obtain for us guidance and courage."

1. It's always a letdown
I campaigned in college (at Catholic University, no less) to be declared the messiah after getting the requisite signatures for a referendum before the student government to that end.

Sadly, I lost. I think CUA diebolded me.

2. Hey, at least you aren't St. Christopher - imagine being named
a saint and then having it taken away from you - all those medals and holy cards. :(

5. Now see, I nominated Rev Cheesehead for pope before the guy
who wears the hats was elected - I think she is much better prepared (in heart & spirit) and so much more qualified than "the Pope" now -- Does that mean we have a DU schism?? She will always be Pope Cheesey to me.

9. I believe you have indeed identified a DU Schism.

I agree with you that Rev Cheese is far more qualified to become Pope than many of those we have had. Sadly, it appears that Club Pope, with it's phenominal gilded castle (Um, what happened to "cast away all your earthly posessions and follow me, for it is easier for a rich man to pass through the eye of a needle than to enter the gates of Heaven"?), fabulous wardrobe, shiny limousines and globe-trotting excursions - intends to remain a Good 'Ol Boys club for all eternity.

Re: Pope John Paul II:

"To his detractors, he was a reactionary trying to turn back the clock on modern reality. Some harshly criticized his ultra-conservative theology, which prohibited female ordination, birth control and abortion. He branded the notion of overpopulation a myth and said the use of condoms as a precaution against AIDS only encouraged the behaviour that led to the spread of the disease. ...."

= sigh =

If only we has penises, merh. We could get closer to god than half the world's population regardless of actual merit.

15. But the question remains, if we had penises, would be any better
than those in power with penises? *sigh*

6. I think you have to be dead to be a saint
So there is an upside.

7. Be careful what you wish for.
The first criterion for being canonised is to have died. ;)

8. Be patient. Your turn will come.

The church is in the midst of a saint-naming frenzy. Why, Pope John Paul named 484 saints in his 25 years, more than all of the popes before him, combined.

Hey, if these guys can get cannonized, anybody can:

11. I am a saint. Someone in the Discordia/Erisian religion who was pope
cannonized me.

So I am Saint Dorktv actually, but I do not draw attention to it. B-)

I'll start praying to you now. Any special sacrifices you might appreciate? Like chocolate or virgins or whatever?
