What's the most appalling thing you've ever seen done to food? |
|
I had a roommate in college who used to bring home huge bags of McDonalds ketchup packets and put them on Ramen noodles to make "spaghetti". He wasn't poor either- he bought a $2000 painting later in the semester. He said he just liked the taste.
Sends chills down my spine just thinking about it.

Broccoroni is yummy. You have to use steamed crisp broccoli though and Annie's Organic Mac and White Cheddar though.
Tomato, raw onion and bell pepper is awesome too. That's taco-mac and cheese.

It's a regional thing in parts of the South, especially on the Mississippi Gulf Coast. My kids thought it was wierd until they tried it, too. Now I have to have a bottle of Catalina in the fridge just for when we order pizza.

I know when I went to Mississippi State if you asked for French dressing the wait staff would comment that you must be from the Coast.

6. British sandwiches before globalization |
|
Edited on Mon Oct-16-06 09:31 AM by MorningGlow
The first time I visited London was in the '80s, before the place was inundated with American fast-food joints and sandwich shops. I had the nastiest sandwich EVER created--dry, thin bread, butter, and some sort of meat--just one or two slices spread out on the bread. I could hardly choke it down. I think some of it is still stuck in my throat somewhere.
And same trip had a Wimpy's hamburger. Mommy... :puke:
On edit: I shud not trie to spel on a Mundae morneng.

Bad. Not as bad as you might think, but still quite bad.
Now, the Peanut Butter and Strawberry Jam Margarita -- wow, that was REALLY bad (peanut butter and tequila - two flavors that do not play well together).

14. One of my college roommates did the same thing |
|
She would boil up spaghetti noodles and put ketchup all over them instead of "proper" sauce. Man it was nasty, every time I saw her do it I told her it was an affront to my Italian food loving self and had to leave the room

15. A coworker had an expensive filet mignon butterflied and burned... |
|
 She wasn't too bright, but she wanted her steaks well-done. When the waiter brought our food to us (we were at a conference and were guests of a student loan lender), everything was cooked just right according to the way we ordered it. However, she decided she wanted hers a little more well-done, so she sent it back and asked the waiter to have it butterflied and cooked a little longer. :yoiks: He looked at her like she was crazy but said, "Yes, ma'am." When he brought it back, it was a charcoal briquet---complete with black ashes to be scraped off. She was thrilled, and she ate every bite. :puke: Now, granted, I like my steaks medium-rare, but that was a total travesty.
The second-worst thing I've ever seen was a friend who made "spagehetti" with tomato soup, milk, and celery. She got spaghetti noodles and poured this crap over it, and she ate it like it was gourmet food. :puke: This woman was not starving by any means---she just had no idea how to cook. And there are canned sauces that are far better than that and no more expensive than what she did. :yoiks:

I'm sorry I'm usually against corporal punishment but really some punitive action should've been taken. tsk tsk
BTW: To me anything that is not red and "juicy" is burned. I know I'm an offensive carnivore. ;)

That's still not as bad as what my dad used to do. When we went down the shore to Sandy Hook, we'd bring seining nets to catch bait with. He used to eat the spearing (little saltwater minnow type fish) live. Just swallow them whole. Apparently, he learned it from some old Portugese/Spanish guys when he was a kid.
I've had sushi that was swimming around fifteen minutes prior, but I can't imagine eating a wiggling live fish.

26. I've seen photographs of a dog being hung and then barbecued. |
|
A series of about five photographs. Notably, while hanging, his or her back paws are just allowed to touch the ground, the belief being that the more the dog struggles, the more tender the meat will be.
I've also seen photos of a cow with a broken leg in a slaughteryard being moved to the slaughterhouse via a front end loader.

during "The things Dad cooked": http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=105&topic_id=5510662&mesg_id=5510712I'll take "Porcupine Meatball" for $200, Alex. excerpted: These might have been more desirable if they were what they sounded like, scary as that thought may be. Ground-pork balls coated in uncooked, dry beef rice-a-roni and then baked or grilled. One lacerated my larynx once.
