No official announcement has yet been made, but Piniella is expected to be presented to the media as the next Cubs manager on Tuesday at Wrigley Field.
The 63-year-old Piniella was the Cubs' top choice from the beginning of their search, and he got the nod over San Diego manager Bruce Bochy and former Florida manager Joe Girardi.
Piniella will be allowed to bring in his own coaching staff, and is expected to hire his former right-hand man, John McClaren, as his bench coach. Piniella is acknowledged as one of the game's top strategists, and frequently plays hunches over the percentages.
"Stats don't lie, but I still think Lou's strength is that he takes the stats, but when the final decision comes, it comes from the gut, and I think that's why he's been so successful," McClaren once said.
Piniella has a career record of 1,519-1,420 in stints with the New York Yankees, Cincinnati, Seattle and Tampa Bay.
