Does anyone else have trouble accepting criticism? |
|
I received a fairly tame suggestion (worded in the form of 'we want to do this instead').
I got a little upset and defended my position. I was told, point blank, to do it the way it was 'suggested'.
I've felt like shit ever since. This guy and me have worked as equals, as a team - then all of a sudden he picks some pointless crap (wording of a press release) and pulls rank on me (which he doesn't have)
Is this me not accepting criticism well, or should I be upset?

1. What are your respective roles in the company/organization? |
|
It makes all the difference in the world to the posed question closing your post.
I used to be a development coordinator and my-now-best-friend was our media liaison. Technically, I'm her boss...realistically, she could and did pull rank on me over this very thing at least once a month...and was right to do so.
I mean WTF do I know about writing a press release?

and I am the Jr. High. There is no authority, other than perceived authority of a Sr. High person over Jr. High.
It was over our select choir, which I referred to as a 'flagship' group. He is of the opinion that we should not advertise it as such - he says it makes the other 140 kids feel less important.
I call shenanigans. I think the 'select' aspect is what keeps the kids working and the program going - the idea that maybe they will make the cut next year.
The group is select - the kids know it - the community knows it. I'm just not into pretending it doesn't exist.
Addendum:
It was done in a 'We don't do it this way' manner. It pissed me off. It could be just me being over sensitive.

5. No...I agree with you. |
|
and if you're doing fundraising for this program, your fundraising professional will too. "Select" programs are appealing to prospective donors as money better spent than money spent on non-selective programs. Possibly unfair, but true.

but not as much as I used to. The district approved my budget request, so I don't have to fundraise to buy music and go on trips. I can give the fundraiser money back to the kids in the form of reward activities and choir camp scholarships.
You are correct about prospective donors. The flagship group is the one that goes and sings - at the mall - at the FedEx corporate HQ - at the Democratic Party fundraiser - etc.
This is the 'flagship' - the face of the program - and I'm not going to pretend it isn't.
