It's a pointlessly rude response to a since request for information. Why bother replying at all, in that case?

It's only cranky and dismissive if you say it without also adding a link that answers the person's question (hopefully with some friendly-toned explanatory text).

Cranky and dismissive (though more in response to a plea for computer help rather than just for information) is "Get a Mac!"

The two guys I know who own Macs have, all by themselves, had more trouble with them than just about everyone else I know has had with their PCs. Granted, that's hardly a scientific survey, but as an anecdote it makes me smile.
