Allman Brothers. "One Way Out"
Man those guys could rock better than anyone when Duane and Berry were still alive.

The 20 Greatest Southern Rock songs just aired again on CMT. Allman Brothers, Charlie Daniels, Skynrd...

Wonderful memories. And damn, they were good.

:)

On edit - or was it GAC?

2. I remember how people would say to me..."If you like the Allman's...
... check these guys out." And I would dutifully check out all the other southern rock bands. And sorry to say I would always be disappointed. Mostly one-hit wonders. The only band that stood up at all was Skynyrd.

The Allmans were in a class by themselves.

4. There are some who still say Duane was the greatest slide quitar player.
Of all time... I certainly won't argue with them. And Gregg was and is a great blues vocalist, who could really play that B-3. Dicky Betts was a great guitarist as well, complementing Duane beautifully in those long trade-offs.

And the rythm section knew exactly what their role was.

They were just a great band. Timeless is exactly right.

7. You saw that too?
Then you know that the Marshall Tucker Band was from Spartanburg, lol. :hi:

Southern Californian by birth, but southern U.S. raised. I cut my teeth on Skynyrd, the Allmans, and so many from those days. :D

8. Followed them all over Florida and Georgia back in the day...

Duane came over to my house one night and I wasn't there -- DANG! And my sister couldn't find my copy of their album for an autograph. My almost-brush with greatness. Gregg still sings great, IMO.

BTW, GD is major depressing tonight. What a relief to get away and get into something else. ABB rocks!

9. Holy shit.
Was it just Duane at your house? Tell me more about that, please. If that had happened to me, I don't know what I'd have done.

10. Well, turns out that someone I was dating brought Gregg by (not Duane)

to meet me. They stayed about a half an hour and probably got high. She remarked about the beautiful gold cross he was wearing --Jesus on one side and Mary on the other--about 2 inches long (and definitely not cheap.) He said someone had given it to him. She says he was drop-dead gorgeous.

I first got to see them play at a talent show held at Gainesville High School in Florida. The grand prize was a recording contract and second was amps, I think. Unbeknownst to the judges, the ABB already had a contract in the works and they just wanted the amps. I think they won but were disqualified and ended up getting the amps, which is what they really wanted to begin with.

I always loved the sexy dueling guitars thing Duane and Barry Oakley used to do. Talk about a turn-on! Oh, and if someone has a funeral or memorial service for me, I want them to play "Whipping Post."
