Harry dog is alive and well and doing great |
|
Two weeks ago I posted here one night when my 14 year old dog was sick. A couple of nights later he developed "bloat" and I took him to an emergency clinic where he had lifesaving surgery to untwist his stomach. There were a couple of touch and go days where he had arrhythmias. Then he came home from the hospital and wouldn't eat for a few days. He was on meds for his heart.
Well, now his heart is back to normal, he is eating well, his stitches are out. Today we took a walk in the woods. He rolled in the leaves, jumped in the lake, played with another dog. He is happy and well and I don't take it for granted, I am so grateful. :-)

It's great to know that after all that he's doing well, animals are so resilient. Thanks for keeping us posted.

I imagined today how I would be feeling if I lost him that night. I'm so happy to have him with me and he's the kind of dog that just enjoys his life. He's got some kind of amazing luck.

Thanks for the update. I always appreciate updates when somebody has a sick pet, I really do wonder about how they are for days after. And I am always happy, of course, when it is good news.
What are the odds that it will happen again? Is there some way they could - or did - sort of anchor his stomach in place to prevent a recurrence?

8. Yes, they anchor the stomach to the abdominal wall |

on the right side, where it doesn't move as much or hold the food. He had a near miss with bloat 15 months ago where we avoided surgery, and I've been worrying about a reccurence ever since. I could have had the surgery prohpylactically but I wasn't too sure if he could handle surgery. Well, he came through emergency surgery with flying colors.
He is an amazing dog. Adopted from the pound on the south side of Chicago the day he was going to be put down (6 months old). Cured of a cancerous tumor at the UW vet school (7 years). Treated for bloat with a non invasive procedure that works 1% of the time (13 years). Treated for bloat with an emergency gastropexy (14 years). He's a real trooper, Harry dog.
