and he was always the queer. He didn't have a ball, but he would run from everyone while they tried to "smear the queer".This went on every recess. And people wonder why there are school shootings.

9. We had one that was neighborhood-specific |
|
I don't think anyone else played this. It was called Hot Peas & Butter.
Someone would hide a belt somewhere on the street. The kid that found it yelled "Hot Peas & butter!" and then tried to hit as many other players with the belt before they got back to the 'base'.
I don't remember if anyone ever won.

Generally let me know who the dicks were, because they'd do the tea party thing before purposely getting you out.
Unfortunately, that turned out to be 84% of the school.

A bunch of kids get a tennis ball and throw it against the wall. If it hits you, or you drop it, you have to run to the wall, touch it, and yell "sui"(pronounced sue-e) before someone hits you with the ball. If they hit you, you have to stand facing the wall, and they get to throw the ball at you(usually right on an ass cheek)from a certain distance. Usuaully fairly close for maximum bruising. If it hits you, you're out. If not, back in the game you go. If at any time someone misses you when throwing the ball, they have to run to the wall before someone else hits them. But if you catch the ball off the wall, you get to throw it at whoever it was that just bounced it off the wall.
So a lot of winging of a tennis ball, plenty of bruises, completely pointless, but quite fun.

19. Knock the other guy off the balance beam. |
|
There was this balance beam, maybe three or four inches wide, about a little more than a foot off the ground, and two guys would start at either end and try to approach the other and knock him off. Whoever won got to be the champion and face the next challenger in line. This went on for what seems like every day for an entire school year, though I'm probably remembering it as longer than it was.

Which involved chasing around cute boys (or in the boys' cases, cute girls,) catching them and kissing them.
Probably wouldn't go over well in elementary schools, now.

8 grades. Sometimes we'd have nearly the whole school lined up for games of Red Rover. The big kids would take it easy on the little ones and sometimes we'd even let one of them get through. I haven't heard anyone mention Red Rover in years. So you think they still play it?

55. I don't think kids play Red Rover any more. :( |
|
Heck, they're not even allowed to play outside by themselves for fear of kidnapping. No games of tag, no riding bikes everywhere and playing in the woods and creeks for hours on end. My parents didn't even know where I was a lot of the time. I would ride for miles on my bike to go to the community center, the tennis courts, the pool, to the store for candy and to see my friends. We loved hiking and exploring the woods and the beautiful mountain where I grew up in Tennessee.
Your school must have been very special! Not many people can say that they attended a one room schoolhouse!

43. A charmingly violent game. |
|
One person (the bulldog) would stand in the middle of the playground, all of the others would line up along one side; at the cue they would have to run across the playground without getting grabbed by the bulldog. Any who were grabbed would become bulldogs, and thus would help to grab more as the non-bulldogs ran back to the otherside...so it continues until there is one winner, or until an ambluance needs to be called. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/British_Bulldogs_%28game%29

44. Charmingly violent is right up my alley! Thanks for the information! |
|
The method by which a runner is caught varies according to local custom, but can involve physically tackling the runner to the ground, or lifting the runner off the ground; in more supervised games the runners are simply tagged, as obviously unsupervised games can become extremely violent. The physicality of the game caused it to gain some notoriety and to be banned in a number of school playgrounds. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/British_Bulldogs_%28game%29
