I started going to the gym, today, and omg!
I can see why some people get addicted to it. It was NICE! I particularly fancy the hip ?abductor/adductor? machine. It felt (slightly obscenely) fabulous to use! I also determined that I have awful chest and tricep strength. Guess that'll be something I can focus on toning up. It was a good educational experience as well. My outer and inner thighs were alot stronger than I thought they'd be, and my quads were a bit weaker than I'd expected. I'm sore already, but I really liked the workout.
It was delightfully energizing.

P.S.- On a more shallow note, fitness experts: If I build up my chest muscles, will I lose boobage? I'd prefer not.:P

1. If you lose fat you'll lose boobage
If you build up the muscle underneath gravity will be kinder.

3. I'm ok with their perkiness, already, I just don't want them to go flat.
It always seems to me that women with alot of tone in their chests have little breast matter- I wasn't sure if it was strictly a body fat issue, or not.

6. You dont need to worry unless your body fat % drops a lot
so unless you plan on turning into a marathon runner or serious body builder, you wont have any problems.

27. no, it's just that they build up their pecs to make it look like
they have more than they do. If they lost that tone in their chest they would look like they had even less. Don't worry about it, like someone else said, if you lose body fat it will affect that, which I don't think you need to do if I remember what you look like correctly. In fact you probably might have to make sure you eat enough because if you start building up muscle, especially in your legs, you will start burning more calories every day just from that.

Well, I lost fat and somehow didn't lose much boobage at all.
Seems there was a "redistribution" going on, and for some strange reason (a good reason, whatever it was!), the only boobage I lost was in my back. :P And yes, strengthening the pecs helps too.

39. Scary? No, not at all. My body fat remains between 20 and 21% now.
My most recent check was 20.8%.

A body fat percentage between 20 and 25% or so is a healthy range for females.

42. It just seems really low to me, personally. But hey, more power to you
besides, what matters is how YOU feel, not what I think. I always thought anything lower than 25% was in the "athletic" range....that's what this website says, too.

Anyway, my body fat hovers around 28-30% and I look mighty fine!! :D

23. Same here.
In '05, I was absurdly thin, like people were getting worried kind of thin, and I wore the same bra size as I always do/did. It was nice. And for the record, there was no reason to worry. I just had a job where I did pretty heavy lifting all day. That combined with my pretty fast metabolism meant I literally just could not keep weight on. If I didn't drink so much, I would have completely wasted away.

7. -
Almost every gym has a "Vinnie" at least one. I know it is a stereotype but my friends in the fitness industry tell me that it still holds true.

By the way-you are really starting at the right time. You will be in full workout mode when the cold winter hits (so you will be more likely to want to keep going) and before the beginning of the year rush (so you will know how to get around to your routine while everyone else is bumping into themselves).

My wife has lost 16 pounds on a diet and excercise (Baby) and I am going through a "cleansing" with psyllium, milk thistle, charcoal, cranberries, peppermint oil, etc. It reall works I feel great.

12. Ahh! I see...
I went mid-morning, and there were alot of elderly people there, although there were a few of us young 'uns. I'm just avoiding eye contact with anyone I don't want to bother me.

16 pounds is great! I'm not trying to lose weight so much as just tone up and strengthen up a bit.

I think it's an ideal time, as well, because I get the winter blahs in a big way, and I'm hoping this will help. It's a looong winter, in Minnesota.

What does you cleansing entail? I'm curious.

You know the only other time your body makes them is during sex :)

And you won't lose your boobies from chest excersize, quite the opposite actually.

Where you lose boobie is when you burn fat, since there is a lot of fat in boobies.

It's so calming. Plus I like the long lean look it gives you. I haven't tried the machine thingies they have at there yet. I have to admit, I'm a bit intimidated by those big shiny metal machines. LoL.

Good luck though. It makes you feel good doesn't it?

Takes a lot from yoga. Much stretching and controlled movements. I don't use machines, but I guess there are Pilates machines. The class I take is just floor work on a mat. I love it.

31. I know a lot of people here hate the franchise, but I started going to
Curves. It's just right for me because I can make myself do any exercise for at least 30 seconds. The only problem I've had so far is getting next in line to a woman busy talking the entire time. The program is set up to have you change machines every 30 seconds, and she kept taking 15 seconds to move along! on the other hand, it's good to see a lot of people built something like me.

No, ya won't drop a cup size or anything. You will actually benefit from toning up your pecs.

Additionally, it's almost impossible for women to get big muscles without taking steroids.

I think about excersising and my pants get too small in the thighs. Which I suppose would be nice if I were thinly built or tall and leggy, but in my case it just kinda emphasizes the squatty, pear shaped body heredity blessed me with. :(

46. My advice, get an intructor to show you how to work out diff, muscle
groups on diff. days so you switch off which muscle groups will be achey the next day. Also, low weight, high reps are a great way to go, you get nice definition without putting on bulk... so in case you slack off due to time contraints or injury, your big muscles do not turn into big flab.
