Poll question: How do you populate your Ignore list? |
|
Edited on Wed Oct-18-06 03:53 PM by undisclosedlocation
I know, I know, honey; you never ever ever ever use the Ignore feature, you want to be open to everybody's ideas, only cowards use the Ignore list, etc., etc., etc. Trust me that there will be choices below for you to click on. (Full disclosure: nobody has ever been on my Ignore list for as long as a week. I generally also subscribe to the views above (or to be totally accurate, just can never shout down my curiosity as to what's behind that "Ignored--Ignored" entry on the list of replies to one of my OPs). But one or two flaming idiots are really asking to be put on the list permanently right about now.

2. If somebody pisses me off, or I find them offensive |

sure, I ignore them. Why not? The feature is there. It stops us getting into fights. I don't see any moral high ground in not using the ignore list. I avail myself of it fully. Some people are on it permanently.

The current count stands at five. All of them drift in and out of the forums, presumably as thier med levels ebb and wane.

4. I've never intentionally put someone on ignore. |
|
(I've accidentally clicked "ignore this person," but that really doesn't count. :P)
If someone pisses me off, I just walk (click?) away. Nobody's ever continued to pursue an argument with me via PM. I go back to the thread later and laugh at how serious I considered this fool.

I was one of the first 1 to 3 people to respond to their posts, that eventually had many more, and I was the only person that they didn't acknowledge.

One thing I wish they would change is so we can hide more than one thread at at time. Everytime I hide a thread it knocks me out of this window and I have to click back in. Were it up to me I would go down the list and hide at least 10-15 threads a day...anything about sports, anything gratingly attention whoring, anything about bodily functions, like the the weeping, infectious wound of someone's father's uncle's third cousin's sister, anything I'm about to get into a ridiculous flame war on (just did that, bye-bye Sir Paul, you broken bottle wielding ghetto thug). I'm sure I'm leaving something out...probably the threads where someone asks a question but they really just want to go on and on about what their answer to the question is and then have everyone kiss their ass about it. Wow, I'm a bitch, aren't I.

18. I've used it. Happily. And amazingly, those on my ignore list manage to |
|
either piss off a large number of long-time members or end up tombstoned for being a combative idiot. I get tired of reading their pointless tripe. I don't put someone on ignore immediately, but after a reasonable amount of time when I feel that being an asshole is really just their only way of expressing themselves. I get too tempted to comment back (my truly lack of self control.)

1. I need to cool off, often because of point 2 or 3: 2. Unsubstantiated/baseless personal attacks / goading or baiting against me 3. They refuse to read another person's POV while blindly telling that person how only they are right or how the other person has not right to feel they do.
and even then I just look at the name and actively choose not to respond. The 'ignore' function can be seen as a coward's way out too. (which is fair, I have people on ignore as well.)
I also clean the list every once in a while. It becomes obvious who needs to be put back on it, even if I am good at remembering names.

Tell me what's cowardly about ending one's participation in a flame war?
If I see the instigator's posts, I'll want to respond, and thus continue it. Out of sight, out of mind.
