my nephew has joined the army. jebus.
and my brother has lost his mind. the kid was studing to be a nurse at a community college, where his tuition was spit. christ. i can't even answer this email.
----

Jay has enlisted in the Army Reserve . He will be going through basic tanning starring in three weeks in South Carolina, home for Christmas then finishing basic in Feb. We're planning on going to it. He will be stationed for school at Fort Sam Houston (World Class Army hospital )
for a year to learn basic nursing then it's back to his MASH (Cash) unit at Mather Field in Sacramento . He will be free to finish his college work being paid by the Army. If his unit becomes activated he goes with them where ever they may go. He really worked the system to get this special deal from the Army.

I am very happy about his decision. It will be a great experience for him plus he will be coming back to the Sacramento area to be in reserve. He will most likely to deploy during his 6 year commitment with the mobile hospital unit. . His contract with the Army gives him 74 weeks of training that will get him far more immediate experience than what he is doing now in the Junior College classes he 's been taking. He wants to finish his education back hereas a Physicians Assistant. This enlistment will go a long way towards that goal plus give him money to get it. He will come back after his time in Texas as an LVN so there are plenty of jobs for him.

3. I'm against the war, and my opinion may be unpopular but...
it will be quite awhile before he's deployable due to training, plus he will be getting valuable nursing experience.

I wish him the best of luck. The military is a good career, just not under *this* president.

i suppose this can be filed under "what doesn't kill me makes me stronger" unless it breaks him into tiny pieces.

5. I certainly hope they keep their promises to him.
A close friend of my stepdaughter's is in Iraq right now--we begged him not to join last year, but he said, "oh, they've promised me this and that..." As soon as he got through basic, they dropped all their promises and sent him to train as a convoy driver. Kid got completely fucked.

You have every right to be angry at your brother. Does he not know what the hell is going on?? Does he think his son will be sent out to some tropical island in the pacific???

9. he thinks he'll be like his cousin
who got a full boat 4 year scholarship, did his rotcie marching, climbed the ranks, rode a tank in the hail mary pass in iraq 1, and was a special forces liaison to tommy franks. he has a chest full of medals, and is a hero. but he also knows that said hero's wife sleeps with a shotgun next to the bed, home alone with 2 little girls, since he is supposedly on osama's personal hit list.
he also thinks that we are doing "some good" over there, and sends me pictures of "the schools we are building."
in other words, he took a propaganda catapult full in the face, and has never really regained full consciousness.
fuck, fuck, fuck.

well, not like there is anything i can do. we barely talk, anyway, since he is a ditto head. he never listens to anyone, let alone me.

He's in Sacto? Want me to go swat him upside the head?

Community college here is soooooooooooooooooooooo cheap, and every hospital around is just begging for nurses.

13. could you please?
smack the both of them. what the hell.
part of it is that my bother has a real exaggerated memory of his own time in uniform. he joined the air force so he wouldn't get drafted and sent to viet nam. he spent his hitch launching weather balloons in california and taking an occasional plane ride into a storm. but he thinks of himself as a "combat vet". he was an f'ed up kid, who found his way thanks to uncle sam. sees it through a vaseline smeared lens.

12. my nephew joined the guard also..
he was deployed to Katrina last year and is still in training. He's in the officer training program and won't be ready to be deployed to Iraq for another year, according to my sister. But, we know that being ready doesn't mean squat to the neocons. I'm not really happy about his decision.

From one auntie/uncle to another, this totally sucks.

17. "He really worked the system to get this special deal from the Army."

sorry for laughing but this guy is so fucking delusional i can't help it.

NOBODY "works the system" to get a special deal.

sure, I thought the same thing when the Army recruiter told me "Tankers get treated like pilots in the Air Force"

3 months later I was neck deep in freezing mud at 2:00 am on a German mountain changing track :eyes:
