Oh. My. Fuckin'. God.
Dead can now show team spirit

The Associated Press

Philadelphia - Many crazed baseball fans have said they would die for a championship. But are they willing to take that devotion to the grave?

Major League Baseball and a company that makes funeral products will soon find out how many fans want to be decked out for eternity in tribute to their team.

Starting next season, fans of the New York Yankees, Boston Red Sox, Detroit Tigers, Philadelphia Phillies, Chicago Cubs and Los Angeles Dodgers will be able to have their ashes put in an urn or their bodies buried in a casket emblazoned with their team colors and insignia.

Major League Baseball has entered a licensing agreement with Eternal Image, which hopes to make urns and caskets for all 30 teams.

Holy shit. Is it just me or does this just....

words fail me.

Damn.

And the League licensed it? What...they gonna put one of those shiny little silver mlb stickers on the base of the urn?

sort of signal from MLB & they start getting up to celebrate championships, demanding soul kisses from passersby, I'm gonna get really pissed.

Note AP's need for copy desks:

The National Funeral Directors Association is meeting in Philadelphia this week and giving its members a sneak peak of what the urns will look like.

30. You're right. It shouldn't.
But they're cheap and the way they look at it, they send it over the wire and it gets picked up by someone else who's going to edit it to fit their hole anyway, so why pay for it at the front end?

Still...I'd think there'd be some pride involved, wouldn't you? Some standard of excellence? At least some standard of...acceptable?

"Many newspapers use AP unedited."

Followed by an example of why they shouldn't.

But they do.

going to look damn silly when three years after they die, the owner up and moves the team to a different city, and changes the name.

Corporate America: There is nothing to crass or too perverse for use to make a buck from.

22. Hi, welcome to DU. I see your point, and I'm not a sports fan, but I
think it's more about how they felt in the past (totally disregarding the fact that they're dead, of course). Hard to explain what I mean, because on the surface it seems like a "duuhhh, now there's a no-brainer" kind of comment.

I do agree with you about Corporate America though.

Why not get corporate sponsors, which would help defray the cost of the funeral? Who cares if the casket looks like a NASCAR racer...it's going in the ground anyway.

Doesn't matter to me of course...when I die, my body is going to the taxidermist.
