You're an 18 yr old boy looking for a job.. |
|
You get an interview.. It's going well.. the interviewr steps out for a moment..
Do you?
1. wait for her to return? 2. brush up on your resume and qualifications?
No..
YOU STEAL HER WALLET from her purse under the desk..continue the interview and then leave..
This happened to my friend today :(
Of course she called the police and they more o less told her there was nothing they could do..
She called to cancel the credit card (she only carries one) the little asshole had already racked up $150 in charges.
the real bummer?
she had put her mother's wedding ring in the coin section of the wallet for safekeeping.
Talk about a ballsy little criminal :grr:

they've got his name and address, and if he used the card, chances are that there's a store clerk somewhere that can identify him.

I'd recommend to call again and try to talk to someone with more brains.

8. That was my thought too then I looked at the OP's name |

Los Angeles police hate being told what to do. They hate the civilians. They operate pretty much like a big gang with matching cars. The stolen car scenes in "Big Lebowski" (sarcastically: "oh yeah, we got people working on it in shifts...") are pretty accurate except that there are very few hispanic cops.

5. Suggestion: Find out where he made the purchase. |

If he went someplace to use the card (as opposed to using it online), alert the store security. See if they caught him using it on videotape and if so, ask them to preserve it.
On one hand, police departments are oftentimes understaffed and overwhelmed. They have to triage cases and something as "small" (to them) as a theft/fraud = $150 is not something on which they are likely to spend much time. Then again, sometimes they are just lazy.
If you do some of their footwork for them (per above) :eyes: and show them you are serious about pursuing it, sometimes they will take the case. If they don't take it you can put together as much of the case as you can and bring it straight to the District Attorney. You may decide that you don't want to go through the hassle, but if not then it's worth a shot.
Good luck.
PS - You may want to start patrolling local pawnshops for the ring.

I think if this criminal gets away with it, he'll try his luck again and again - probably bigger each time.

Yeah, if he's that bold by now then I'll guarantee you he has a rap sheet at least three feet long.

but that ought to be a plus, the base police should have a record of him coming on and all...I would think they would take a very dim view of someone stealing on base...

10. I'd go to the police department and not leave until they take a |
|
complaint. They absolutely should be able to do something about a theft when you know who did it.

14. She was given a "case number", but the kid does not live in our town |
|
so the police did not seem terribly interested in pursuing the matter. She DOES know where the card was used, and she plans to go to that town (where he lives) and contact their police..
She also has his name and address, but the police told her that SHE could violate the law if she called his mother or intervened on her own..
catch 22

16. I think she should offer it to him as a way to get him there and |
|
have the cops present when he arrives. It'd be a great time to question him (if the cops actually agree to it).

17. The problem is that this is a "low-level" crime |
|
in an area with drive-by shootings and gang activity. Our police are not big on "property crime"..
I told my friend I would call his Mom and let her know that if her son gives her some jewelry, or if she finds some, he did not buy it...
