10 Random Music Questions
Here's the survey:

1) At what age did you buy your first album?

2) How many albums (tapes, CDs, downloaded albums, vinyl - any kind) are in your collection?

3) How often, on average, do you add to your collection?

4) Where do you usually get your music?

5) What are up to 20 artists in your collection?

6) Do you have favorite music writer?

7) Do you sing, play, or write songs?

8) Do you have a favorite year for music?

9) How often do you go to a concert?

10) In a paragraph, what is your general outlook on music?

My answers:

1) I bought my first one when I was around 13

2) Approx. 900 albums total

3) A couple albums a month, except around Christmas, when I ask for music for Christmas gifts

4) I get my music mostly from websites like amazon.com, cduniverse.com, cdbaby.com, and circuitcity.com

5) The Beatles, Frank Sinatra, The Beach Boys, Simon & Garfunkel, Aretha Franklin, Luther Vandross, The Rolling Stones, The Byrds, Bruce Springsteen, The Bangles, U2, R.E.M., Pearl Jam, Sarah McLachlan, Madonna, Thea Gilmore, The Corrs, The Dixie Chicks, Merle Haggard, Beetoven

6) Stephen Thomas Erlewine

7) Nope, but I like writing reviews/opinions

8) 1965: Beatles' Rubber Soul, The Byrds began, lots of interesting events

9) Usually none, but this year I've gone to a couple (Madonna and Dixie Chicks concerts)

10) The Beatles are my favorite artist. I am not and never will be a music snob, but I am discerning. I'm a pop fan, but some of the pop artists I love aren't so well known: Hope 7, Lillix, Damone, Stefy, The Weepies, Hem, Brie Larson, M2M, Stars, New Pornographers, Sonya Kitchell, The Jayhawks, Bonnie McKee, The Faders, Persephone's Bees, The Pierces, Leslie Mills, The Like, etc. - even the Veronicas are middle-range known. Known pop stars I enjoy include The Corrs, Madonna, Cher, Barenaked Ladies, Kelly Clarkson, Michelle Branch, Nina Gordon, Fountains Of Wayne, Avril Lavigne, Beyonce, Indigo Girls, Sarah McLachlan, Anna Nalick, and The Fray. I love these styles: classic rock, pop/rock, power pop, folk, singer/songwriter, indie, big band, rock and modern rock, country, alt-country, and classical. Not crazy about death metal, rap, and pure techno. To sum up, I love music so much that it's a big part of my life!

1. In my answer to #10
I left out some artists like The Bangles, Blondie, The Cars, and Go Gos because they are pretty much rock compared to other 80s material - not pop.

So what are your answers?

1) At what age did you buy your first album?
14, Misfits "Evilive". Still one of my favourite cd purchases I've made.

2) How many albums (tapes, CDs, downloaded albums, vinyl - any kind) are in your collection?
I'm not sure, 70ish cd, waaaaay too many downloaded albums to count.

3) How often, on average, do you add to your collection?
I buy cds whenever I can afford to, and I download music constantly.

4) Where do you usually get your music?
Bought: HMV; Downloaded: Soulseek.

5) What are up to 20 artists in your collection?
Alexisonfire
Alkaline Trio
Armor For Sleep
At the Drive-In
The Mars Volta
Refused
Snapcase
Mission of Burma
Gang Of Four
Husker Du
Fugazi
Bright Eyes
Cursive
Hot Water Music
The Bled
Atmosphere
Sage Francis
The Coup
Elliott Smith

6) Do you have favorite music writer?
No particular favorite, but Conor Oberst and Omar Rodriguez Lopez are both high on the list.

7) Do you sing, play, or write songs?
Yes, though I do none of those things well, haha.

8) Do you have a favorite year for music?
Not particularly.

9) How often do you go to a concert?
I PLAN to go to them just about any time a band I like comes to town. I have a tendency to miss concerts though, usualy because my friends are douchebags and fuck up my plans, haha.

10) In a paragraph, what is your general outlook on music?
I've always been a music lover. I can remember in kindergarten, when the teacher asked us what we wanted to be when we grew up, I said a rock star, haha. I've probably been developing my personal tastes since I was 10. I've liked some shitty stuff over the years (Limp Bizkit? What the hell was I thinking?) but punk and hip-hop (and indie rock, too, I guess) have always been constants for me. They're pretty much at the forefront of my listening habits in some capacity or another these days. As for actually playing music, I've played bass for 4 years, and have dabbled in guitar (but I'm basically too lazy to really sit down and teach myself) and singing (and a little rapping, haha). In conclusion, music is fun.

3. My taste has also developed
Edited on Thu Oct-19-06 11:18 AM by mvd
At first, I liked mostly all pop like New Kids On The Block, Tiffany, Debbie Gibson, and Wilson Phillips - with a little Beatles and other stuff thrown in. Later, I went through a huge country music phase. Now, I'm pretty much all over the map except for the genres I mentioned that I don't like. :hi:

5. .
1) At what age did you buy your first album?

You mean with my own money? Probably like 12 or 13. It might have been "Murmur" by R.E.M., which I procured with paper route earnings.

2) How many albums (tapes, CDs, downloaded albums, vinyl - any kind) are in your collection?

Well over a thousand, maybe even over two thousand. At this point I wouldn't even try to count.

3) How often, on average, do you add to your collection?

Constantly.

4) Where do you usually get your music?

Stores in my area:
http://www.mymindseyerecords.com
http://www.bentcrayon.com

Online:
http://www.emusic.com

5) What are up to 20 artists in your collection?

Liars, Oneida, Roxy Pain, Machine Go Boom, the New Lou Reeds, Parts and Labor, Public Image Ltd., Saccharine Trust, Minutemen, Neutral Milk Hotel, Red Krayola, Self Destruct Button, Gang of Four, Spizzenergi, Big Dipper, Iron Maiden, Roué, Slayer, the Cardigans, My Dad is Dead

6) Do you have favorite music writer?

Joe Carducci

7) Do you sing, play, or write songs?

Yes

8) Do you have a favorite year for music?

No

9) How often do you go to a concert?

I used to go to as many as 5 a week when I was young enough to handle that much drinking AND I was on the promo/comp gravy train AND I lived walking distance from two sweet clubs. Now it's more like one show every week or two. Sometimes a month will go by without me seeing a show and I won't even notice.

10) In a paragraph, what is your general outlook on music?

Eh, it's like any other cultural produce, it's mostly phony bullshit, but amazing things are out there for those willing to do the digging.

10. Damn, I took "music writer" to mean person who writes music...
Not person who writes ABOUT music. I've been reading bits and pieces of "Rock and the Pop Narcotic" recently (finally, haha), and I'm digging that.

6. Let's see what we can come up with.
1) At what age did you buy your first album?

The first I can remember was about 14.

2) How many albums (tapes, CDs, downloaded albums, vinyl - any kind) are in your collection?

Can't really compare as it's not in albums.

3) How often, on average, do you add to your collection?

Every couple of weeks.

4) Where do you usually get your music?

Two main sources - Amazon.co.uk and eclassical.com

5) What are up to 20 artists in your collection?

J.S. Bach, T.L. da Victoria, G. da Palestrina, W. Byrd, T. Tallis, G.F. Handel, G.P. Telemann, C.M. Widor, J. Langlais, C. Tournemire, Sir Arthur Sullivan, D. Buxtehude, D. Shostakovich (but I've been banned from listening to him by swimboy), F. Poulenc, L. Vierne, L. Janacek, M. Reger, R. Carver, O. Messiaen, H. Purcell.

6) Do you have favorite music writer?

Oddly, I don't really read about music very much.

7) Do you sing, play, or write songs?

Sing badly, play a couple of instruments badly.

8) Do you have a favorite year for music?

Very difficult one because single years aren't easy to consider in classical music...1685 was the year in which J.S. Bach, G.F. Handel and D. Scarlatti were all born.

9) How often do you go to a concert?

Probably about 10 times each year, at a guess.

10) In a paragraph, what is your general outlook on music?

Music is the most primal of all art forms and is totally innate to humans...and I believe also to animals. I listen to music for hours each day, and usually have it accompaning me when doing other things; I find it difficult to get to sleep without some gentle sounds bathing me. My tastes sit by the large majority within the canon of Western classical music...but within that multiplicity of genres sits mostly on the fringes. I am heavily impressed by the work of renaissance composers, as well as modern (20th century) ones but tend to omit a vast proportion of what falls between them.

1) At what age did you buy your first album?

6, "Nevermind The Bollocks" - Sex Pistols

2) How many albums (tapes, CDs, downloaded albums, vinyl - any kind) are in your collection?

Too many to count, we're talking thousands.

3) How often, on average, do you add to your collection?

Whenever my brother comes come, he collects CDs and has since he was 8. He has over 3,000 CDs. I burn what I want and like out of his collection. It's pretty much my sole source of music.

4) Where do you usually get your music?

My brother Dan.

5) What are up to 20 artists in your collection?

Alkaline Trio, Rival Schools, Sparta, Mission to Burma, Elliott Smith, Bright Eyes, New Found Glory, Strike Anywhere. That's a small sample for now.

6) Do you have favorite music writer?

Dude, if anybody ever tries to tell you that Elliott Smith was not the most-talented songwriter of our time, tell them to clean-out their motherfucking ears.

7) Do you sing, play, or write songs?

No. Well, I sing in the shower.

8) Do you have a favorite year for music?

"Seventy-six was a good year for me, it's been uphill since."

9) How often do you go to a concert?

Now? Never. I used to bounce at The Black Cat years ago and saw everybody under the sun from 5 feet away for free.

10) In a paragraph, what is your general outlook on music?

Music is life. Quod erat demonstrandum.

13. Is there anybody going to listen to my story?
1) I think I was ten. I'd wheedled some Beatles albums for Christmas presents, and in their wake, there was a group called the Hullaballoos that were trying to capture that market, even to the extent of wearing blond wigs to try and simulate that long hair look. I liked their hit single and saved up my allowance to buy their album. It sucked.

2) I've got at least 3000 vinyl, and probably as many CDs. I may have another thousand cassettes, but that's probably balanced out by the overlap between the LP and CD collections.

3) The Law of Diminishing Returns has definitely kicked in-- I think I can count all my record store purchases in the 21st century on the fingers of one hand.

4) Nowadays I buy most new CDs from performers at their gigs, maybe half a dozen per year.

5) I think I'll answer that question by trying to think of the last 20 things I've obsessed over: Steve Reich, King Crimson, Allman Brothers Band, Emerson Lake & Palmer, Steely Dan, The Zodiac: Cosmic Sounds (this terrific '60s psychedelic exploitation album), Luis Bonfa (brilliant Brazilian guitarist), Can (seminal '60s/'70s Krautrock band), Entrain (current band from Martha's Vineyard), Genesis (mainly the Peter Gabriel years), Ry Cooder (Chavez Ravine is my favorite record of the 21st century), Frank Zappa, Dave Douglas (brilliant contemporary jazz trumpeter/composer), Thelonious Monk (especially the rediscovered Carnegie Hall concert with Coltrane), Igor Stravinsky, Procol Harum, Rush, Steve Roach (new age music with substance), Quicksilver Messenger Service, the Who.

6) Not since the demise of Lester Bangs-- who I deeply respected even though I seldom agreed with him. I used to write myself, and I would be my own favorite if I ever finished anything any more. (I have a dream to do a book.)

7) All of the above. PM me about Man Behind the Curtain, my 2004 collection of protest songs.

8) I usually answer that question by saying 1967, the year of Sgt. Pepper, Satanic Majesties, After Bathing at Baxter's, The Doors, etc.

9) Generally I consume live music from local bands in bars or ad hoc venues. I've grown to hate going to full fledged concerts, mainly because of the crowds.

10) I don't know how to characterize what I like. I have ideas about music that I'd like to realize, and I tend to pursue music that I think will teach me something about how to do what I want to do-- usually something about harmony and/or structure. So my listening is often way more ambitious than my actual skills. But I tend to think of it all as rock-- or rather, I envision rock as this deliberately mongrel form that devours everything else and winnows out what it finds useful, so I tend to listen to everything imagining how I would adapt it for a rock band.

1) At what age did you buy your first album?
Around 13 or 14

2) How many albums (tapes, CDs, downloaded albums, vinyl - any kind) are in your collection?
About 1500 LPs, at least 1200 purchased CDs, probably 2500 downloaded CDs (I'm going to jail for a long, long time) and 500-600 tapes I've recorded.

3) How often, on average, do you add to your collection?
Depends. Sometimes as many as 10 a week.

4) Where do you usually get your music?
Internet & from my public library.

5) What are up to 20 artists in your collection?
Coltrane, Bill Evans, Stan Getz, Beatles, Frank Sinatra, Pentangle, Bjork, Jonatha Brooke, MC5, David Grey, Kinks, Dead Can Dance, Rickey Lee Jones, Yo La Tengo.

6) Do you have favorite music writer?
Nope

7) Do you sing, play, or write songs?
I sing in the shower where no one can heare me.

8) Do you have a favorite year for music?
1957. Just about every great bop album in my jazz collection was recorded in 1957 for some strange reason.

9) How often do you go to a concert?
Probably once or twice a month. Although I wouldn't call it a concert, more like hearing live music since it's usualy at small venues.

10) In a paragraph, what is your general outlook on music?
I love just about everything except rap and country. Indie, obscure rock, jazz, classical, singer-songwriter, world, Indian, African and Celtic, downtempo, trance, slowdive and some goth. I love exploring new music and making new discovveries. Especiall someone I've never hearcd of who has done a lot of recording. It's like discovering a new author with w ton of books in prent.

17. here goes
1. 14
2. somewhere around 500
3. these days, a couple of times per month
4. itunes, amazon.com, occasionally retail, occasionally artists websites
5. Neil Young, Nirvana, Bush, Rush, Stevie Ray Vaughaun, Tommy Emmanuel, Johnnie Bassett, Pink Floyd, Alice in Chains, BB King, Freddie King, The Who, R.E.M, My Morning Jacket, Yng Wie Malmsteen, Dave Matthews Band, Green Day, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Jethro Tull
6. Neil Young
7. I play guitar (badly)
8. Not really...too many good ones
9. 10 -12 times per year - lots of those local/lesser known acts (last "headliner" was Dave Matthews in Aug)
10. I like most types of music, other than rap and most country. Seeing music performed live is the best for me. I love seeing almost any kind of music played well. My dad played clarinet in a dixieland band for years, so I grew up around that and some of the New Orleans jazz. The 70s/80s got me more into rock.

21. My Answers
Edited on Thu Oct-19-06 01:07 PM by Crisco
1) At what age did you buy your first album?

Nine, and I bought two: Beatles Magical Mystery Tour and Alice Cooper's Billion Dollar Babies.

2) How many albums (tapes, CDs, downloaded albums, vinyl - any kind) are in your collection?

I had about 2500 pieces of vinyl before I sold all but one shelf-full. I don't know how many CDs I have. Too many to count. I don't think I ever had more than 100 tapes. I haven't downloaded any albums.

3) How often, on average, do you add to your collection?

Two-seven albums per month.

4) Where do you usually get your music?

Work and retail.

5) What are up to 20 artists in your collection?

Pick a letter.

6) Do you have favorite music writer?

Nick Cave.

7) Do you sing, play, or write songs?

I used to.

8) Do you have a favorite year for music?

Nope.

9) How often do you go to a concert?

One-three times per month.

10) In a paragraph, what is your general outlook on music?

I think it's good that we now have so many distractions (internet, gaming) to draw young people's attention away from popular music. The industry's amazing success with boomers has led to stagnation. People need to get away from it, to not throw so much money at what has always worked before. It's the only way music will truly evolve, ie, let musicians go into their own little corner somewhere and do their own thing. The world will come back when the industry is ready to truly move itself forward, content-wise.

There's actually a lot of good, great music out there right now. Few can hear it.

style (like pop or indie) exclusively. I think most every style, even ones I don't like, add something to the music scene. So curiosity is what I like to see in kids.

23. ok
1) At what age did you buy your first album? 13, I think, I might have had a few 45s before that.

2) How many albums (tapes, CDs, downloaded albums, vinyl - any kind) are in your collection? it's probably in the 1000s all told.

3) How often, on average, do you add to your collection? weekly

4) Where do you usually get your music? stores, mostly

5) What are up to 20 artists in your collection? Laurie Anderson, Linton Kwesi Johnson, Miles Davis, Belly, Voix de Bulgaire, Patti Smith, Ramones, REM, Fred Frith, Joni Mitchell, The Methadones, Don Byron, Moxy Fruvous, Unseen, The Horrorpops, WIlly Nile, Robyn Hitchcock, The Hasbeens ( friends of mine), Midnight Oil, and Bob Dylan.

6) Do you have favorite music writer? Bach, then Miles Davis, then Don Byron and for standard rock, Bob Dylan and Warren Zevon and for fun, Moxy Fruvous.

7) Do you sing, play, or write songs? used to be in a band, so yes. I still play drums and bass occasionally.

8) Do you have a favorite year for music? 1978 or 79, I think.

9) How often do you go to a concert? not as often as I used to....

10) In a paragraph, what is your general outlook on music? I love eclectic, passionate smart and witty music. There are few forms of music I dislike, other than bland corporate pop. I came of age with 70s rock and became a life-long punk fan, but I grew up playing classical piano and organ and sang in a choir. I also was in punk/post-punk band for years, so I've loved many forms of music in my time.

Fred Frith fans of the world unite! You have nothing to lose but the chains you dangle on your guitar strings :hi:

Do you know the work of This Heat and/or Camberwell Now?

Wanna start a band?

I dunno, maybe in the back of my mind somewhere. ;) I'll have to check.

I'm a weird drummer who played in some offbeat odd bands(mostly self- taught but with a few years of actual lessons under my belt.) I love all the wonderful odd time sigs and playfulness of musicians from that time. I suspect we'd have a fun time!

33. Answers
1. Ten or eleven, I think.

2. A few thousand or so; I've kind of lost count, to be honest.

3. Probably about every 2 months on average.

4. Criminal Records (good independent record store here in Atlanta) or Amazon.

5. Beethoven, Philip Glass, Edgard Varese, Charles Mingus, Serge Gainsbourg, Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, Tom Waits, Massive Attack, DJ Shadow, Soul Coughing, Public Enemy, Barry Adamson, Air, Cocteau Twins, Cowboy Junkies, Future Sound of London, Big Black, Richard Thompson, Junior Brown, Einstürzende Neubauten

6. Ralph Ellison, for his essays on jazz.

7. Not really. Used to play an instrument, but haven't touched it in years.

8. For jazz, it's 1959. Mingus' "Blues and Roots" and "Mingus Ah Um", Miles' "Kind of Blue", Brubeck's "Time Out", Coltrane's "Giant Steps", Ornette Coleman's "The Shape of Jazz to Come"..a lot of brilliant albums came out that year. When it comes to rock/pop, or classical, or pretty much any other genre, I can't really think of a specific year that stands out.

9. Rarely these days; used to go to a couple a month when I was younger.

10. I have fairly diverse tastes; I like whatever I happen to think is good, and I think there's good music in just about any genre (it strikes me as rather narrow-minded to dismiss an entire category of music based on a few preconceived notions and limited exposure). And I can't imagine life without music; listening to something like Beethoven's Ninth, or a Bach fugue, or Coltrane's "A Love Supreme", can be close to a religious experience for me, and even when the listening experience isn't transcendent I seem to come away with some essential need fulfilled.

34. My answers:
Here's the survey:
1) At what age did you buy your first album?
I was 10, and I bought Master of Puppets by Metallica on cassette tape

2) How many albums (tapes, CDs, downloaded albums, vinyl - any kind) are in your collection?
Not sure. Between 8,000 and 10,000

3) How often, on average, do you add to your collection?
Daily -- I get albums sent to me at work

4) Where do you usually get your music?
See above. One of the few perks of my job.

5) What are up to 20 artists in your collection?
Some trivia bits -- I own more Grateful Dead albums than any other band, followed closely by Bob Dylan.

6) Do you have favorite music writer?
Me, of course!

7) Do you sing, play, or write songs?
All three. I've played guitar for about 16 years

8) Do you have a favorite year for music?
Not really, but if it were up to me, I'd've been born in 1951, making me 16 for Monterey, 18 for Woodstock, and still in my 20s in the late 1970s, for the Grateful Dead's best years, plus the Ramones, Talking Heads, etc. at CBGBs and the golden age of southern- and country-rock

9) How often do you go to a concert?
About once a week, sometimes more

10) In a paragraph, what is your general outlook on music?
We are in the midst of a Renaissance of the old greats (witness the most-recent albums by Bob Dylan, the Stones and David Bowie, among others, each of whom has released their best work in decades in the last couple years), while the saccharine pop of the late-1990s and early-2000s has given way in the charts to punchy rock acts like Snow Patrol. Even Justin Timberlake (currently on Billboard's No. 1) has had to update his sound to a harder edge to remain in the game, though he has done so unsuccessfully, coming across as a more of a whining juvenile attempting sexy than the real, Barry White deal. The golden age of rock came 35 years ago or so, and the golden age of hip-hop is over by about 15 years. But all in all, a discerning listener can find brand new groups today that are just as vital, just as necessary, as anything in the history of rock. Because rock 'n' roll IS necessary. The powerful pulse keeps blood flowing just as surely as the heart that thumps in your chest. Like my avatar once said, "Music is fuel."

38. answers
1) age = no clue
2) albums #s = quite a few downloads, some CDs, some cassettes but I'm about to chuck those since I don't have a working tape player anymore

4) Where = anymore I download it

5) 20 artists = Babes in Toyland/PJ Harvey/Hole/Nirvana/Ani DiFranco/Violent Femmes/Sex Pistols/Heart/Blondie/Jimmy Cliff/Bruce Springsteen/Desmond Dekker/Joan Osbourne/Marcia Griffiths/Dixie Chicks/Concrete Blonde/Dwight Yoakam

6) Do you have favorite music writer? someone here who writes about music sometimes, but not a professionial, no

7) Do you sing, play, or write songs? nope, nope, nope

8) Do you have a favorite year for music? I like early 90's, but no specific year.

9) How often do you go to a concert? never, I go to festivals when I can.

10) In a paragraph, what is your general outlook on music? That there are different kinds just like there are different kinds of visual art. That people are drawn to types of music that express for them emotions or sides of themselve that aren't normally expressed, and that that is why people have such different tastes. That there are types of music that are like abstract expressionist art, very dark, very dissonant, somewhat inaccessible to the average listener, but that doesn't mean that they are bad or that the person doing the singing or playing is untalented, it just means the artists have to find different notes to convey grisly topics and circumstances. Like how do you sing about being raped as a child? What are the notes for that? It isn't going to sound like Buddy Holly. Can it be done? Bjork/Sugarcubes did it, brilliantly, I think, here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gPsalRStVko&mode=related&search=
I find that kind of music more interesting, when people are trying to find notes and melodies for things that don't lend themselves easily to being expressed lyrically. I think it's true that some people are pretentious about alternative "deep" music, but you can also miss something very important that these artists are trying to say if you dismiss it out of hand.

39. My answers:
1) At what age did you buy your first album?

"Albums" were not at all prominent when I started buying my own music in the 50's. I probably bought my first "45" when I was about 11 or 12. I probably bought my first "album" when I was about 15, and it was folk music, IIRC. I'm ashamed to say my first "45" was Pat Boone ripping off Little Richard (I was very young and very stupid).

2) How many albums (tapes, CDs, downloaded albums, vinyl - any kind) are in your collection?

Thousands, easily.

3) How often, on average, do you add to your collection?

Once or twice a month, at least.

4) Where do you usually get your music?

I download a lot of music, and I have a monthly subscription at yourmusic.com for CD's.

5) What are up to 20 artists in your collection?

Dylan, The Band, Allman Brothers, Springsteen, Paul Simon (& Garfunkle), Beatles, Stones, Doors, Clapton (in his various forms), The Who, CCR, Fleetwood Mac (older versions primarily), various bluegrass artists, various 50's doo wop groups, Beethoven, Mozart, Haydn, Sibelius, Miles Davis, Thelonius Monk.

6) Do you have favorite music writer?

If you mean writer of music, Dylan. Otherwise, no.

7) Do you sing, play, or write songs?

No.

8) Do you have a favorite year for music?

Maybe 1968. Everything was exploding back then, including popular music. "Hair" the musical for example, IIRC.

9) How often do you go to a concert?

Rarely, these days.

10) In a paragraph, what is your general outlook on music?

It's become much more positive, recently. I've become aware of some wonderful new artists that are genuine, and Dylan is back, as great as ever. And I've discovered great bands like The Ramones, The Clash and the Pretenders, and Patti Smith, all of whom I missed initially.

3) How often, on average, do you add to your collection? Rarely anymore.

4) Where do you usually get your music? Like Fred Meyers, Costco, or Amazon.

5) What are up to 20 artists in your collection? Ummm, Sublime, U2, The Killers, INXS, System of a Down, The Stokes, The Clash, The Sex Pistols, Blink 182, Snow Patrol, Aerosmith, Pearl Jam, The Ditty Bops, David Bowie, Pink, No Doubt, Nirvana... how many is that? hehe

You have to look there, too. Some indie acts are being signed by major labels, and artists like The Dixie Chicks and many I've mentioned get signed. Radio's quite limited with its playlist, but XM 20 at least changes things up.

1) At what age did you buy your first album?

Thirteen.

2) How many albums (tapes, CDs, downloaded albums, vinyl - any kind) are in your collection?

About 500.

3) How often, on average, do you add to your collection?

These days, about every other week.

4) Where do you usually get your music?

Tower Records, unfortunately. Have no idea where I'll go once they close up shop.

5) What are up to 20 artists in your collection?

Iron Maiden, Aerosmith, Rush, Queensryche, Foghat, Ted Nugent (don't start - I didn't know back then), Black Sabbath, Deep Purple, Ian Gillan (his solo stuff), Rainbow, Kiss, Motorhead, Blue Oyster Cult, Gary Moore, Thin Lizzy, UFO, Scorpions, Accept, Good Rats, Nazareth.

6) Do you have favorite music writer?

No.

7) Do you sing, play, or write songs?

No.

8) Do you have a favorite year for music?

1980.

9) How often do you go to a concert?

Haven't been to one since 2002. Back in the 80's and 90's, I went to over a hundred.

10) In a paragraph, what is your general outlook on music?

I don't listen to music for lyrical brilliance or anything like that - I listen for a sound I like. If there's no electric guitar, it's a good bet that I have little use for it. I absolutely HATE the "unplugged" crap, and have a ton of albums where I know every sound made by the guitars but couldn't reproduce the lyrics to save my life. My taste hasn't changed one iota in the last 30 years and really don't like the new bands at all - to give you an idea, Queensryche is about as new of a band as I like.

47. Okay...:)
Here's the survey:

1) At what age did you buy your first album?hmm, 14 yrs old, Ride the Lightning....

2) How many albums (tapes, CDs, downloaded albums, vinyl - any kind) are in your collection? Over 700 cds, plus...a good number of songs from some friends, all total, 105 gigs of music....

3) How often, on average, do you add to your collection?every now and then, its hard to get new music, or I should say...find "new" music. Its hard for me to keep up on the new music...I usually go through Pawn Shop cd racks, or used music stores...btw, this reminds me...I still need some Cream/Def Leppard...I need to remember this!

4) Where do you usually get your music?lately...used music stores, like Hastings...or pawn shops...pawn shops are really, really dirt cheap, like 1 dollar for cds...

5) What are up to 20 artists in your collection?Metallica, Slipknot, Fear Factory, ILL Nino, Guns and Roses, Ozzy, Pantera, Bryan Adams, Celine Dion, Garth Brooks, Alison Krauss and Union Station, Rod Stewart, Richeous Brothers, Limp Bizkit, Savage Garden, Neil Young, Pink Floyd, Life of Agony,

6) Do you have favorite music writer?yes, Alan Roberts, from Life of Agony...his lyrics are awesome, and K. Caputo, he wails them oh so well...

7) Do you sing, play, or write songs?I do write songs, I try to sing, but I sound like death warmed over...and I do play the guitar/piano/clarinet...:)

8) Do you have a favorite year for music?no, not really...I prefer decades myself...60's IMO were the best, but the 90's is my second fave decade.

9) How often do you go to a concert?hmm...not often....I've seen Full Devil Jacket, Papa Roach, Stone Temple Pilots, Luxt, Mudvayne, Deftones, Linkin Park, Limp Bizkit, Metallica, Manhole, Life of Agony, and Type O Negative....

10) In a paragraph, what is your general outlook on music?Music, soothes my soul, and without music my life would be pretty dismal. Its amazing how music can reflect your current attitude, or change your mood. Music is a huge part of my life, and my tastes are varied, just like how "life" is varied. My current outlook on the music I hear is very bleak. The current songs I hear are, to be brutally honest.....it sucks, its a slap to my face. The new music I hear is from Vh1, Mtv, and the radio, and I don't hear much, that is...that I would consider "good" or "great."

7) Do you sing, play, or write songs?

No

8) Do you have a favorite year for music?

No, but several years stand out.

9) How often do you go to a concert?

Almost never

10) In a paragraph, what is your general outlook on music?

I think there's still good stuff out there, just not what's playing on the radio or TV. I'm mainly stuck in the past with my music, but that's when good music was more common. I love all kinds of music (except techno and heavy metal), and keep discovering "new" artists that I enjoy.

Some are poppy, but it's good pop.

53. These have been fun to read
Here are my answers:

1) At what age did you buy your first album?

When I was seven, I bought The Beatles' 20 Greatest Hits on cassette. I already had a number of my dad's old (record) albums that I listened to, but that Beatles album was the first one I bought.

2) How many albums (tapes, CDs, downloaded albums, vinyl - any kind) are in your collection?

Let's see: around 250 CD's, plus 50 or so burned CD's. Probably between 2,000 and 3,000 vinyl albums, but that is a combined collection with my dad. I purchased probably a third or so of them. Too many 45 RPMs to count, and maybe 500 or so downloaded tracks. I've never downloaded an album in full, though.

3) How often, on average, do you add to your collection?

It fluctuates. Since I buy mostly vinyl, I've bought people's old collections of hundreds of albums at a time. (Not with the intent to keep all of them, of course, but buying collections is a lot of fun because you get a good idea of what music the person was into throughout their life. They tell interesting stories.) On average, I probably buy a couple of dozen CDs a year; generally, a few new ones but a lot of compilations and reissues as well. I've been trying to save money, so I haven't actually bought any CDs since July, which is quite a while for me.

4) Where do you usually get your music?

Used record stores/flea markets/Ebay for vinyl; Music stores/Best Buy/online for CDs.

5) What are up to 20 artists in your collection?

The Beatles, The Byrds, Soul Asylum, Simon and Garfunkel, The Drifters, CCR, ELO, Neil Young, Jethro Tull, Chicago, STP, Hall and Oates, Pearl Jam, The Moody Blues, The Grass Roots, The Raspberries, The Guess Who, The Beach Boys, Iron Butterfly, The Hollies.

6) Do you have favorite music writer?

I don't have one in particular. Although music critics often annoy me (much of my taste in music isn't exactly in line with theirs!), I like reading them fairly often anyway if just for some perspective about an album. I recently discovered this guy's site: http://starling.rinet.ru/music/intro.htm and I enjoy reading it because of the in-depth reviews he gives to the discography of many (mostly sixties- and seventies-era) artists.

7) Do you sing, play, or write songs?

I'm a not-very-good drummer (though I can't play a set) and also a not-very-good xylophone/vibes player, due to my time spent in junior high/high school band. I have a suspicion my limited skills are fading with the years, though! I'm a passable singer, but I'm better at imitating real singers than singing my own voice! I've made some attempts at writing lyrics, but not music.

8) Do you have a favorite year for music?

I don't know of one particular year, but I'm the biggest fan of late-sixties/early-seventies "rock" (in the broadest sense of the word) music.

9) How often do you go to a concert?

On average, probably about one a year.

10) In a paragraph, what is your general outlook on music?

I love music, and I listen to it at every opportunity. (One of the best aspects of my current data entry job is that I get to listen to headphones while working!) I have something from pretty much every genre of music that I like, even if the bulk of what I listen to is classified as "oldies" or "classic rock." I remember agreeing with the poster a few months ago who posted that they could probably find at least one song that they like from almost any artist; I don't understand why some people restrict themselves so much. I know it probably seems as if my music taste is stuck in the past, but I'm not closed to new music. I can pretty much always find something on the radio that I like, and will occasionally find a new band or be introduced to one that I like. I think a lot of why I'm into mostly older music is the fun of being able to dig into a group's complete discography little by little, and see what they were recording at different points as they progressed (or sometimes regressed). Maybe that's just the history nerd in me in coming out. I also tend to play certain albums to death once I discover I like them. There's just something somehow comforting and very enjoyable about playing a certain album you love to death; there are only a handful I've played to the point that I got sick of them.

54. Your outlook made me think of something
I buy so much new stuff, that I don't get to dig in to the collections of older artists enough. Perhaps I should set aside a time to catch up on stuff.

I also agree with you on music critics. I don't follow them, but like you said, as a fan I like to read people's perspectives. You can also get alerted to new music from a review.

55. Yeah
Often I won't have known an artist or band I liked is releasing an album until I read a review of it! (That probably just means I should do a better job of keeping up with the music media.)

Yeah, I think the way I tend to approach music has more than anything to do with what I listened to while growing up. I was just such a big oldies/classic-rock fan that I never really changed. I have opened my mind to more music over the years, though, and have found that I like a pretty random mix of stuff across most styles. I need to do a better job of keeping up with new music as I'll often discover a band/artist quite a while after they've been out and feel annoyed at myself that I was missing out on them for so long. I often get too lazy in the search and just fall back on the stuff I know I like. Plus, with newer artists you have a better chance of getting to keep up with news about them, watch them develop as artists, maybe even see a concert of them... though I'm not a big concert-goer. You miss out on that with the largely broken-up bands and sometimes even deceased artists that I often listen to.

I think you would enjoy looking into some of the discography of older artists that you like; it can be a lot of fun. I enjoy reading your music posts, as you seem to appreciate a lot of different music and give interesting perspectives on it. A lot of people seem too caught up in an artists' image or critical reputation, but you give a variety of stuff, pop or rock, major-label or indie, a shot, which I think is cool.

58. Thanks, last_texas_dem!
I appreciate you saying that, because that's how I strive to be.

I like writing reviews, but for the reason I think is best: to give opinions on a topic you love. Not to try to out-write the other guy, not because you think your taste is better than the audience you are writing for, and not to have an agenda when writing reviews. Also, I think that often times, peer pressure leads reviewers to not be the best they can be.

I'll start looking: I still haven't bought all the Bruce Springsteen, U2, R.E.M., and Blondie albums. I want to try out artists like Jeff Buckley.

:hi:

1) At what age did you buy your first album?

I was 9, I bought The Beatles "A Hard Days Night". I already had over 30 albums and a lot of 45s, but this was the first I got with my own dough.

2) How many albums (tapes, CDs, downloaded albums, vinyl - any kind) are in your collection?

Oh lordy, 2000 plus all together, probably more.

3) How often, on average, do you add to your collection?

Maybe once a month these days.

4) Where do you usually get your music?

I buy online mainly because music stores are out of the way for me.

5) What are up to 20 artists in your collection?

Some names people will know. I have a ton of shit that is more obscure, but there's no need to list them.

Beatles, Elvis, The Who, Dylan, Syd, Muddy, Cash, Dion Dimucci, Mott and Ian, SAHB, Pink Floyd, Bowie, Pistols.. hell.. I don't know.

6) Do you have favorite music writer?

A few would be, Dylan, Lennon, Neil Young and Willie Dixon who seemed to write every good blues song there is. :)

7) Do you sing, play, or write songs?

Yes, Yes, Yes, ...

8) Do you have a favorite year for music?

No

9) How often do you go to a concert?

As little as possible. I don't even want to go to ones that I play

10) In a paragraph, what is your general outlook on music?

Music is an innate religion. I believe that we are born with the need for rhythms, tones, beats and so on. It is one of the most important things in our life and it is universally accepting. I have never met a person who hates music. I have however met people who hate on music and musicians, but I honestly believe that there is room for everyone and that all types of music is needed to keep the Yin and Yang of it all. I know I rag on some people in my "Today in history" thing, but it is just to joke. I honestly do not think anyone's musical tastes suck. Music is too personal to people, and telling them their tastes suck is like telling them that they are too stupid to think for themselves.

57. Mine
1) Age 10. "More Of The Monkees".

2) Easily a thousand.

3) Used to be quite often - now only a couple times a year.

4) On-line sources, direct from the artist if possible - otherwise smaller indie CD shops.

5) Beatles, Dylan, Ellington, Basie, Louis Jordan, Grateful Dead, Mellencamp, John Prine, Talking Heads, Cheap Trick, Dave Alvin, Jason and the Scorchers, Tommy Keene, Guster, Fountains of Wayne, Allen Sherman, Spongetones, Kingston Trio, Elvis Costello, the Mavericks....more more more...

6) A few. Lennon and McCartney, for sure: but also Dylan, Ray Davies, Leiber and Stoller, John Fogerty, John Prine, Collingwood and Schlesinger (Fountains of Wayne), Kostas....the list goes on and on.

7) Yes, yes, and yes.

8) 1966. Things were bubbling nicely right before "Sgt. Pepper" and the Summer of Love.

9) Hardly ever anymore. I'm just too damn old.

10) Hooks, hooks, and more hooks. A three minute pop song is a thing of absolute beauty.
