Someone stole all my groceries out of my car.
I ran to the store this morning to get groceries with my kids, and then stopped off to pick up some meat at another store in town. Jack was screaming and and being a maniac when I tried to get him out of the car at the second store, and I forgot to lock the doors. I ALWAYS lock the doors. When we came out, about twenty minutes later, someone had stolen all my bags. The kids were in tears, because I had let them each bring a dollar and pick a little toy item, and their things got stolen too.

I really hope the person(s) who stole my groceries needed them alot more than I do.

4. That's too light.
Needs to be heavier. And don't aim it square in the middle, they do need to suffer first.

9. I'm so sorry Lara...

I always worry about that when I open the hatchback to unload and then get a phone call or something. That's a tough situation. On the one hand to be angry and violated. On the other, to wonder the circumstances of the person who took them. I'm so sorry the kiddies had that happen to them. :(

10. I was just lamenting to my husband about the collapse of community.
It seems that in Buffalo there's been a problem with "kids" throwing snowballs and rocks at the work crews trying to restore power; and stealing tools out of the trucks. What's worse are the scavengers cutting the downed lines and stealing them for the copper! I'm guessing very few people are actually involved, but it makes life harder for everyone. When I was in England I was really creeped out by the video cameras everywhere (stores, roads, on the streets, I mean EVERYWHERE!) I guess the English decided that they'd had enough of petty vandalism and street crime. It's true, I didn't see graffiti like I saw all over Germany, but I don't think I'd make that trade-off.

11. Oh man, that is low.

But it seems you might take the same approach I do when shit like this happens: After I've allowed myself a bit of time to be really, REALLY angry... I try to reframe it. I consider how desperate a person must be to do something so low... whether they are homeless or otherwise too poor to afford groceries, or wandering the streets while mentally ill, or a drug addict or so poorly raised that they think what they did is okay, whatever the case may be, it is obvious to me that they have many more problems in life than I do (regardless of whether those problems are the result of bad fortune, ignorance or bad choices). I try to find some comfort in the thought that they probably really do need it more than I do. If I am feeling particularly pious, I'll imagine that I've somehow learned of their pathetic situation, felt sorry for them and gave outright gave them whatever they took. That kind of takes the sting out of the loss.

Then again, some other times I simply acknowledge and praise karma.

14. so sorry
so sorry , that is awful. I really got upset about the kids stuff, because they don't understand.

Quite a long time ago, my uncle had his jeep packed with x-mas gifts...and while at church, someone broke in and took them all.

It really makes me sick to think people can be that heartless!

19. Yeah, it's less about the money
(although I'm definitely not happy to be out that) than it is about the violation of it. I keep telling myself, "it's probably someone really needy," but then I can't help thinking that I have a fifteen year old, now rusting minivan, and whoever stole from me could easily tell that I don't have alot of money, either. Ugh. I'm sure, true to my typical form, I'll rage about it for about half a day, then calm down and put it into the appropriate perspective.

20. The police officer who returned my call to the p.d.
told me that someone had been stealing from cars parked in a residential neighborhood nearby, last night, as well. I live in a town of 10,000, so patterns form pretty quickly when stuff like this happens. I don't expect to recover my stuff, but I hope the perpetrators are caught by someone, eventually. When NoelMN was little, I was so broke at one point that I had to borrow money from his piggy bank to get him milk. I was mortified at doing it, even though I knew he was too little to care, and I'd pay him back with interest inside of a week. I can't imagine stealing from someone else. I just can't.

I know that locking is a hassle sometimes with a young'un. Does your car have a remote lock button on the keyfob? I find it invaluable with KayTot--locking the car after I put her in the shopping cart, or unlocking it to put her in her car seat. WAY easier than unlocking the driver's door, opening it, unlocking the doors, then opening hers to put her inside.

(edit to add) If you don't have the remote locking thingie, some cars can be retrofitted easily. I did that with my Honda, took about 10 min to install as a DIY.

26. Jesus, what an awful thing to happen...
And not only because you're out the money you spent, and the time, but because it hurt your kids. I went to the grocery store, just yesterday, and it's never my favorite thing to do, dealing with the crowds and the lines and the traffic. But I often see women there, trying to do their shopping while dealing with small children, and I don't know how they manage it. My sincere sympathies.

p.s. I love your sig...:-)

I'm sorry that happened to you... and I hope the same thing. I love that you have that optimistic, caring outlook.

Glad they left you the car and that you and yours are safe and well. :) Did you give the kids another dollar to spend elsewhere? That part breaks my heart...

30. Any chance there is a surveillance camera focused on the parking lot?
The one time I relented to buying something at the new local Wal-Mart was when my son just had to get a soccer practice gizmo for his 5th grade"secret santa" pal who was departing to Mexico before Xmas vacation started. We had looked for it at at 2-3 other stores in the next town, but they were either out of stock or way overpriced. The next day my husband asked what had happened to the car- I hadn't even noticed the big dent halfway up the rear fender because it was dark when it happened and that side of my car was in shadow. I'm pretty sure someone swerved into the space next to mine, but overshot. I wish I had gone back and asked about the parking lot surveillance tape.

A friend was hit by a car while riding his bike in S.F. , but only had a description of car and driver and the first part of the license plate #.
The next day he went back and watched the traffic at the same time of day that the accident had occurred. On the third day, he saw the same car and driver and was able to give the police the rest of the license #. They arrested the guy, who ended up paying for medical bills for treatment of the leg gash my friend had received when he was hit by the car.

31. That is an unbelievably low thing to do to someone....
I live in a close-in suburb of Chicago and left a new microwave in my backseat last Friday night (until I could get someone stronger than I to carry in and install it) and nothing happened.

Sorry that this happened to you and your kids.

33. Thank god it was only your groceries, dear heart.
Here in Seattle a man jacked a minivan at gunpoint yesterday. The woman who found herself dragged bodily out of her vehicle had her 4-year-old daughter and 2-year-old son in the back of the van. They're missing and Amber alerts have been all over the media here.

My heart aches for your loss and your poor disappointed children, but thank god they're safe at home with you.
