By the way, there's no such thing as "American English." You speak English. All you have is a few different nouns, which constitutes a dialect but not a different language.

If you doubt this, consider the ease with which I, as an Englishman, can understand you. Would that be the case if it were a different language?

What is wrong with that? I believe it is what you meant anyway.

Although I could have posted "wanker" and I suppose that would have qualified.

23. I understand Polish...
and I don't understand Polish.

I speak Spanish and I don't know Spanish.

I don't speak French but I can listen to my cousins jabber until they're bleu in the face and understand every word.

I had a point but I don't recall what. Oh...now I remember, I don't think Brits and Americans truly speak the same language...merely highly-similar ones, allowing for comprehension without anything approaching fluency.

I nearly forgot my dirty foreign word (or in this case phrase) which is:

Przetłuszczony Guevna

There are a number of expletives in English English that aren't even considered such in the US.

Sodding jumps to mind. Bugger.

29. The differences can still be rather substantial...
especially where colloquialisms are concerned; for instance, a sentence like "I was on the M1 and some berk in a juggernaut pranged my offside front wing" would be largely incomprehensible to most Americans. Even dialects of the same language can sometimes be mutually unintelligible.

48. Yes, Billy, but they as Americans, can't understand us.
I've been in LA for six months and I feel like I'm speaking Swahili half the time, for all the uncomprehending stares I get. A visit to a fast-food drivein window is almost the scientific definition of "random." I don't think I've yet received what I ordered.

So I guess American English is a one-way dialect. We understand them, they don't understand us.

I'm from Québec, so the difference is of the same nature as the one between Brit and American English.

90. Parisians are complete snots when it comes to that
I've met more than one in the States who asked me to "say something in your colorful dialect" once they found out I'm French Canadian. I usually reply that *my* dialect is in fact much closer to French as it was spoken in the 1600-1700s, and I have no idea what the f*ck *they're* speaking. That usually shuts that down right there. :P

32. que
French, roughly means "that".

An expletive is a word which is not any grammatical part of speech but is added to a sentence to make it read or sound more pleasing than it otherwise would be. The only reason people think "expletive" means an obscenity is because when transcripts of the White House tapes with Nixon cursing were released to the public, the editors wrote "expletive deleted" rather than admit that the president uses foul language. "Obscenity deleted" would have been such an admission.

93. Ah I was waiting for someone to post that.
I learned several choice curses from a Filipino friend years ago but that's the only one I can recall.
It's a good (bad) one!

85. Pizdyets! (Russian)
The "C" word. But it's often used like this:
"Pizdyets! That's a great movie!"

95. Nimi shimi pec poji-da
Korean for "your mother has a bald pussy."

And then there's my second favorite: skotch mnie na khuj. (Khuj is pronounced like "hooey.") Which is Polish for "jump on my dick."

Essen mich (German for "eat me") is always good too. "Essen meine Schwanz" (eat my dick) is more explicit but most people can figure out the first one.

One of my Polish linguists taught me the best one I ever heard but I forgot the Polish. The English translation was "I fuck women only with my mouth because my dick is too big for any pussy."

But really, everyone needs this book: http://www.amazon.com/International-Dictionary-Obscenities-Indecent-Expressions/dp/0933884184

97. Ne budha.
It's Telugu (from India) and is roughly the English equivalent of "fuck off."

Of course, I spelled it somewhat phonetically, if that helps.
