What do you think? (Opinions much appreciated)...
This week, I had my groceries stolen out of my vehicle in the Super One parking lot. I’d neglected to lock it, struggling with a flailing three-year-old and my two other children, and someone took advantage of my open door, and raided the contents of my car.
When something unfortunate happens, I always try to put it in perspective. I told myself, “This was probably the work of someone really desperate and needy. They probably ultimately felt bad about it.” It was difficult to convince myself of their lingering decency, though. One look at my fifteen-year- old, rusting minivan would’ve indicated that I am not a person of significant financial means, and they weren’t taking something from my children and I that we could easily do without. No matter my need, at various points in my life, I would never steal from anyone, much less someone with little more than myself.
Perhaps this person sees theft as acceptable, though. Our administration has pillaged the coffers of social and educational programs that aid, foremost, the needy in society. It has become a standard of policy to provide “wealthfare” to corporate entities, and to decry the value of offering a hand up to those struggling to escape poverty, wrongly characterizing the masses of the working poor and the unemployed as willful and morally apathetic parasites. They decry a woman’s right to choose whether or not she may have an abortion; but they sever funding to programs that help those same women achieve the kind of life in which they never have to contemplate such a decision, in the first place. They engage in a war, under false pretenses, and rationalize the killing of, it is now suggested, not only thousands of coalition forces, but hundreds of thousands of Iraqi human beings.
In being robbed, I felt a sense of victimization that I can only liken to that I have experienced under the thievery and bullwhip policy of Republican government.
I don’t care if I ever get my carload of groceries back, but in November, I’ll be casting my vote, in hopes of seeing my country returned to its citizens. I hope you’ll do the same.
