I saw something that made me feel sad the other day.
I live near what used to be the El Toro Marine base. I just happened to be driving by the base on Irvine Blvd. and noticed all of the empty base housing. Meanwhile all of the local news outlets are carrying stories of all the homeless people "camping" in "skid row" in downtown Los Angeles.

It seems a waste to me to raze all of those houses and dormitories, in the interest of real e$tate development, when with some remodeling, these buildings could easily house thousands of people.

What a country.

1. It is a waste
There have been so many. Sadly, this administration is about profit for private contractors and corporations, not the needs of the citizens.

It's good to see you sweetie

3. So does this mean you have your internet connection
that you can rely on and that your life is settling down?

I sure hope so. :pals:

6. I saw something that made me feel sad the other day, too.
It was KitchenWitch ignoring her DU fantasy football responsibilities and losing badly to my Avenging Finns in a rematch of last year's DU Super Bowl. Now THAT is sad.

P.S. Sorry to hijack your heartfelt thread with my pointless taunting.

7. How do you like Irvine?
Have you been to the Spectrum yet? My kids (and I) go there pretty much every weekend. We're in Lake Forest, next city down from you.

8. I love the Spectrum!
although we are far closer to the Irvine/Tustin Marketplace. The Marketplace is a supreme cluster fuck. I can never find the store I want in an efficient manner there.

10. You are so right about Tustin Marketplace
I used to go over there on occasion when Ikea was still there. Now I have zero reason to go.

But Spectrum...I enjoy going there. I live at the bookstore when I'm the kid's ride and not doing a movie. It gets a little pricey (with all the books I buy) but I don't mind waiting on the kids when I'm there.

14. its a waste, and here is another wasteful story...
When the state of Alaska, was building the Swan Lake dam, in SE Alaska...the State, decided to buy a bunch of single wide/double wide trailers, enough to house hundreds/plus of workers...after the Dam was built...the crew left, leaving a ghost town of sorts.....

When my father worked out at Swan Lake a good number of years later, I was 10 yrs old, and my brother Tom and I would go through the camp site...the crew literally, left food, pool tables, desks, chairs, their playing cards, helmets, some tools...everything...it was similiar to some end of the world movies...just desolate...

My father, took some things from the camp(against company wishes too), and a few months later the state came back in...with earth moving machines...dug up a big HOLE in the ground...and pushed all of the trailers into the ditch....and covered it up...talk about waste...

17. Oh, how sickening. Why are we Americans so wasteful? Is it a result
of our multitude of resources? I'll never understand it.

15. Nice to see you, KitchenWitch!
It isn't the country, it's the county. A little better than it used to be, but still so, so conservative.

My husband and I have donated to the Los Angeles Mission for years, but about 5 years ago, we thought it would be nice to do something locally. I went to the OC Rescue Mission down by El Toro to donate and make arrangements to drop off food baskets. Well, my first thought was why here? Expensive lease, state of the art office equipment and plush furniture. You can't help but wonder just how much of each donation is actually going to people in need. I left.

We donate everything to the thrift shop at the Circle in Orange and we donate food baskets to needy families through a school network.

18. Good for you
That is also an excellent charity. Please let me know if I can be of any help locating anything you need. And, if I may make a suggestion, get to the Crab Cooker in Newport Beach. Fabulous food served on paper plates and then a stroll on the pier across the street. :hi:

I just moved here, and am amazed at the way Irvine has both developed and not developed.

21. I wish you were president.
I like your compassion. People are human beings. I know that sounds silly, but our government need to be reminded that the "skid row bums" are people. It still amazes me that statistic I saw years ago that said many homeless people are veterans. That's mind boggling if you think about it. Yep. What a country.

:hi:
