Poll question: How long have you been married to the same person?
Edited on Thu Oct-19-06 09:32 PM by survivor999
I'm still too young to think about marriage and all that. But I'm curious about it. Pretty much all my friend's parents are divorced. Mine aren't, buy they're never together.

9. My husband and I stuck it out til the end
he died 3 years ago. He wasn't one to make committments and I imagine the one he made to me was his only. We were only married 15 years before he passed at age 54. We didn't marry til I was 30 so our time together was short.

11. I'm 52; stayed married for only 3 yrs; and have no regrets about that
the married part and the totally single parts were the worst; but most of the time I've had great boyfriends who each helped me grow in ways I doubt I could have if I'd stayed with the same person much longer than I did. Marriage is overrated, at least for women.

I read somewhere of a survey that established that the happiest folks are older single women, the most miserable are older single men, second most miserable younger married women; and I find all that pretty credible.

38. Sweet - We're 45 together, 42 married with offspring but sans the
horse and cats (but 3 dogs to date - the newest being the most loving 9 month old dog in the world!).

The why "she's put up with it" question also has no answer in my home - I guess the ladies are a bit closer to Sainthood then the men!

24. So where is 30+ and 40+ and 50+ years? This is a Democratic Party
board - not a GOP "family" values populated group. I know there are more than myself at 40+ and I suspect there are 50+ in the crowd.

And being together all the rime is tough to do in a 2 working persons family. Limited together time doesn't mean a thing. Folks still love each other and value their time together.

My parents are also hardcore Dems to the bone, and they're at 38 years.

And FYI, they were 19 and 23, and they eloped after dating for three months (there were INS issues involved). There were tough times, oh yes. But they saw it through.

Don't rush into it. When it's right, you'll know. I can't tell you how many people I know who said they had doubts on their wedding day. All of them are divorced. I never had a second thought. Like I said, when it's right, you know it.

75. 18 years on October 1. Think long and hard before you do it.
Edited on Fri Oct-20-06 12:19 AM by borlis
It sure isn't what I thought it would be. I haven't been truly happy in years and with 3 kids I am pretty much stuck for a while. The funny thing is that most the women I know think the same way. They would probably never do it again if given the chance.

90. Hiya, borlis!

I'll second your thoughts. Getting married was the biggest mistake of my life. None of the women I know would ever do it again. :puke: Ain't worth it!

Having a husband (mine anyway) is just like having another kid.

on edit: I've been married for 17 years.

We knew each other for nine years before we got married (we dated the last six of those years). Got married August of 1992. It hasn't been all rosy, but we're still together.

91. Just celebrated our 15th anniversary
funny thing is, they won't let us get married. Has something to do with defending their own marriages. I don't understand it really.

Actually I do--it's called ignorance, fear, bigotry, manipulation . . .

96. Just for the record, length of time people have been married
is no indication of it being a happy marriage.

It may be. But plenty of people stay unhappily married to their spouse due to fear, inertia, don't want to split up their assets, etc.

We'll celebrate our 10-year anniversary March 22.

We've been together for 14 years, though--dated for 3 years, lived together for a year, & took the plunge. I'm glad I did.

117. Would have been 41 years, a few months ago!
But it *only* lasted 35:

Five years of lust and bliss....

Twenty years building a family, raising kids and getting them through college...

And then, instead of being happy we had all that... it just ended with ten years of phony stature and unhappiness.
