If you ever searched for a post in the archives so that you can give a link to someone, you will probably have found a problem. When you find the post you want, the search function gives it to you in 'view all' mode, like this:

That's not the best way of giving somebody a link to a post. But how can you collapse the thread back into 'view message' mode? There is no link or button on the page to do it. Fortunately I have figured out for you how to do this.

Step 1. Click on the post in the thread listing that you want to see, to make the browser jump down to post in question. Now examine the URL - the bit after the democraticunderground.com/ will read something like this:

discuss/duboard.php?az=show_topic&forum=105&topic_id=5350434#5350666

We will get the thread in 'view message' mode by manipulating the URL.

Step 2. Change the text show_topic in the URL to read show_mesg instead.

Step 3. Change the hash sign # near the end of the URL to read &mesg_id= instead.

The URL should now look more like this:

discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=105&topic_id=5350434&mesg_id=5350666

Finally, press enter or click the 'go' button on your browser, hey presto! You get the thread in 'show message' mode, viewing the post you wanted!

the way you have a "View All" link when in view message mode, but no corresponding "View Message" link when you are in view all mode!
