The RetroLounge Daily Poem Thread (Fri 10/20/06)
Love Poem: 30 Candles

There is a woman now,
young and strong and lithe,
and when she moves

I cannot help but tense and moan
until whatever's strained me
breaks inside and flows out

like a song. I forget my bones
are turning hard like stone,
are turning white with age,

forget degrading mornings
when seizure takes me by surprise
and leaves me flat and helpless

on the bed. I forget, for her,
the sudden swish of air it takes
to quench the candles on my cake

and let them burn and melt away
with all the long and vacant years
I rode alone, dizzied,

scratching little vacant songs
for all the girls who left me spent,
spent and dying in my vacant room.

Bob Zordani
