When did Charlie Daniels go Freeper?
I mean, he wasn't ALWAYS a freeper - "Uneasy Rider" and "Long Haired Country Boy" lead one to think he may have been a bit more progressive in his youth...

But now he leads his tourbus every MLK Day to an overtly racist song (pining for the days of slavery...)

1. I think he's always been a Freeper.
:yoiks: He just wasn't as vocal about it. Ever since he came out with The Debbul Went Down To Georgia, I stay away from Charlie Daniels... :(

3. Mid-80's
When his became "born-again" and started preaching fundie christianity.

His music began to suffer too. No more 'Uneasy Rider', no more 'Still In Saigon', no more 'Long-Haired Country Boy' or 'Devil Went Down To Georgia'...

He was always a bit of a provincial jackass, but a talented one, and for some reason turned his back on his more tolerant ways. He was a session player for Dylan in the early 70's, playing bass for him. His albums from 1973 through 1981 are all pretty solid and quite diverse stylistically. Now it's just ham-fisted jingoism and redneck cliches.

Fewer musical figures in the past 40 years have declined so pathetically as Chuck Daniels.

5. I agree. We used to listen to his albums during college in the late
70's. I saw him in concert three or four times - he had some very good stuff then. He sure has changed, hasn't he?

6. When the records quit selling...
but I always thought his music sucked. Just really stupid and obvious garbage.
