12 separate classes of high school kids do not know who Keith Richards is
my dad is a high school guidance counselor here in SE Wisconsin, and I was talking to him last night and he told me a story about a drugs/alcohol class he was addressing.

he asked the question if anyone in the room knew anyone who had been hurt in anyway (physically) as a result of drugs/alcohol and jokingly gave as an example keith richards falling out of a tree (like he did a few months back).

blank stares.

he repeated this in the next 11 classes, and the only kid who thought he recognized the name was thinking of keith urban, the contemporary country singer.

he even dropped the name MICK JAGGER as a clue, and still, none of them got it.

12 classes. and nothing...

4. That is so pathetic. A lot of people at my school know Keith Richards.
We've got a nice little faction of classic rockers--myself included, of course, though I'm one of the sole jazzers. :D

5. Why should kids know the names of old fogies?
C'mon. Mick Jagger is over 60. Most high schoolers think 30 is really really old.

6. Blank stares during a drug/alcohol lecture?
I think Keith Richards himself would have responded the same way.

9. Face it, if you're a high school senior, Keith Richards is
43 years older than you, an old man, someone your parents got excited about.

Have you seen your grandfather baby?
Standing in the shadows?

14. My parents were always upset when I didn't know some old fogey singer, too
Like... well... Hell, I don't know who they listened to. Pat Broom, or something.

My 13 year old daughter, on the other hand, listens to Aerosmith. She loves classic rock, the stuff I grew up on. I hate it now, of course. I've heard it enough, I'm burned out on it. So I crank up Usher, Lauryn Hill, Nelly... She switches it to an oldies station. Weirdest damn thing.

I haven't knowingly ever heard a Stones song past the hook. This makes my kids second generation nerds.

I know them, and I'm trying to forget them...I don't have much love for the Stones....But, the kids should remember the name at least, especially Mick Jagger...

24. But its a new generation...what do you expect?
I'm 30, and I know the Stones...do you expect 14yr old freshman to know them? Damn, Nirvana is old school to them probably...unless they had music influence from an older friend/parent/whomever...

That made me feel old and I'm...nevermind lol. My kids (the oldest 2 are 10 and 9) I'm sure don't know who Richards is. But they do know Jay Black and Buddy Holly. Hey, don't judge. :P We like our classic bubble gum pop around here lol. :D And they know Jerry Garcia and Jimmy Buffet. You just can't go wrong there lol. ;)

She don't remember the queen of soul

Every person growing old is eventually confronted with the irrelevance of their world. One of life's little insults.
