1. Yeah,,, I know...

I went "off" Paula Dean permanently when I saw her add hard boiled eggs to turkey gravy. I can handle good, authentic Southern cooking (I grew up on it!) even when it's unhealthy. But most of her "recipes" seem both unhealthy and unappealing to me.

12. The eggs aren't unusual in gravy
Authentic Southern cooking sometimes does include eggs in turkey gravy. We call it giblet gravy & it's pretty good.

although my mother with South Carolina roots never made that. Maybe it's a regional thing? Anyway, since I HATE eggs, it didn't go over to well with me.

35. It might be regional
I've had it at family gatherings in OK, MO, TX, AR & TN. A few restaurants as well. We never have roast turkey without it.

I'm sure for an egg hater it does sound repulsive. :)

33. Second that. Both sides of my family are as southern as you can get...
...and we always have finely chopped hard boiled egg in the turkey gravy. It's fookin' good, too.

4. My mom calls her the butter b*tch. I don't have a television but if I did
I certainly wouldn't watch her show. The lengths to which that woman will go to try to make recipes artery clogging truly baffles the mind.

6. Are those the two Scottish women who would basically add meat
to meat, with a side of meat, all topped off with butter, cream, or lard?

8. LOL! I'm pretty sure they both died of heart disease, but I really
enjoyed that show. I still remember one where they cooked what must have been a 50 lb roast (unless it was a mastodon I can't imagine what animal they got it from); watching them try to lift it was side-splittingly hilarious. And then there was a kidney episode which I swear was "start with 24 beef kidneys - serves 2."

Edited on Sat Oct-21-06 03:46 AM by Kutjara
Jennifer Patterson died a couple of years ago, but her chef partner Clarissa Dickson-Wright (full name Clarissa Theresa Philomena Aileen Mary Josephine Agnes Elsie Trilby Louise Esmerelda Dickson-Wright) is still very much alive and bringing the glories of non-diet, robust, artery-clogging cuisine to those equipped to appreciate it. Long may she wave.

By the way, Clarissa is not just a bon-viveur. If you want to read about a woman who has made quite a few strides of her own, read more here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clarissa_Dickson-Wright

25. Thanks for the link! You're right - she's far more than
a largish woman with a passion for unusual and meaty ingredients. (It looks like I was wrong about Paterson, too; she died of lung cancer, not heart disease.)

27. Paula Deen's cooking has that wonderful, down-homey feel.
She comes across as a warm and loving wife and mother, and her show is a delight and a comfort.

26. I call her the queen of Mayo, since that seems to be a 'secret ingredient'
in a lot of her recipes.

To be fair, not everything of hers is high fat. She has some good 'salads' with different kinds of cabbage made with vinegars and just a little oil. I think her mission is 'fast and easy' though, using convenience foods whenever possible. My mom gave me 2 of her cookbooks. There are some good recipes in there, but yeah, a lot of high fat stuff.

she's got a corny ass sense of humor but I like watchin her make good ol southern cooking. and I'm also partial to her because she used a recipe from San Antonio (my hometown) to make DELICIOUS brisket. wait till she tastes a brisket taco with guacamole with those fabulous homemade flour tortillas, off the hook in SA!!!!!!! sniffle, I'm getting home sick.
