Is croquet supposed to be a sexy sport? I don't get it.

It seems like in the last two weeks I've heard several people allude to the erotic connotations of croquet. Maybe I'm missing something. But other than the sexual innuendo you can force onto any sport that involves sticks and balls (jai alai, softball, cricket, bad minton--all pretty unsexy, if you ask me), I just don't get the connection between croquet and subliminated animal lust.

Then, just now, while I was looking for some pictures to liven up some of my posts here at DU this evening (thank you Google Image search!), I find these midcentury atrocities...





Am I missing something? I mean, yeh, their cleavages are splayed forth and they look like healthy girls. But what exactly is erotic about these pin ups? And why is a lame ass upper class lawn sport like croquet associated with sex?

It is the most nasty vicious game imaginable, can be played whilst drinking, doesn't really involve physical exertion...what more is there to want in a sport?

That said, I've never heard of any erotic connotations - but here in Britain just about anything which involves the upper-classes also involves a heck of a lot of bed-swapping too.
