1. I liked Man of the Year
The cinematography was done in an almost documentary style. Funny and timely. Hopefully not prophetic.

3. Yes, I reviewed it in my journal. Hubby and I liked it too, but
I read a heap of negative reviews when the film opened on October 13th.

In peace,

9. This was
hubby and my first movie 'date' since LOTR ROTK. (We don't get out much - at least for movies.)

Mostly we rent BBC shows. "Monarch of the Glen" we really like. "THe House of Eliott" and the ELizabeth George, Inspector Linley Mysteries.

I guess I like to be entertained when I go out. Heavy stuff just depresses me and I get enough of that just reading and watching the news.

4. We rented it here in Orlando, but I fell asleep after the first hour.
Adam Sandler doesn't do much for me -- not handsome, not charming, kind of ZHLUBBY -- if you know what I mean.

My grandson summed it up, "He finally threw the remote away when it want awry!" What a cute 8-year-old Nicholas is!

Thanks for the information.

Friday. It's "Flags of Our Fathers" -- anyone seen it yet?

We have two more days to fill and we'll probably take a shot at that one. (Pun???)

15. I saw it yesterday
I think I was the youngest one in the theater by a good 40 years, but I've always been a bit of a history buff and can't resist a good war movie for some reason. I enjoyed it as much as someone could enjoy a movie about such a heady subject but the characters were well developed and it was interesting to see how they struggled with their "hero" title. The battle scenes were INTENSE and quite reminiscent of Saving Private Ryan which I use as the gold standard for any filmed battle scenes. I expect to see a lot of nominations for this movie come awards season.

20. "The Departed" Was Beyond Outstanding For Me

I think it's the best thing Scorsese has ever done, which is the same thing as saying it's a genuine cinematic classic. Outstanding writing, acting and direction. Everybody's at the very top of their game in this one.

Helpful hints: (1.) Don't get too attached to any of the characters; and (2.) Don't let ANYBODY give away the jawdropping ending sequence before you have a chance to see it. Enjoy.....

7. WE liked "The Notorious Bettie Page" alot
Reviews were meh, but we thought it was really good. The script was a bit uneven, but the casting/acting and costuming were terrific. Gretchen Mol didn't deserve the slam reviews, imo. Great cinematography, too.

"American Dreamz" was great if you're an American Idol fan. Love Mandy Moore and Hugh Grant.

22. A good movie and I think that some reviewers, like Roger Ebert
did like it.

Hard to believe the narrow mindedness and the chauvinism of the fifties.

10. The Prestige
I liked it quite a bit but I can't say much about it without giving potential spoilers.

The basic plot: Two up and coming magicians in turn of the century Victorian London, Robert Angier and Alfred Borden (played by respectivly by Hugh Jackman & Christian Bale) launch into an intense rivalry which becomes increasingly bloody as they try to best one another.

The format harkens back to director Christopher Nolan's earlier film Memento, starting towards the end of the story and switching between the past and present as Angier and Borden read eachother's journals.

I was at some disadvantage because I accidently read a spoiler about one of the character's major secret, so some of the potential surprise element was lost for me.

I give it Five Top Hats. ;)

11. The Prestige is pretty good.
Starts off kinda slow, and the ending is a little predictable, but it's still well done and kinda fucked up.

17. I also saw The Queen with Helen Mirren last night
It was one of those days when I got a phone call from a friend after I got out of my matinee asking if I wanted to see a movie that night...so I went out again. Mirren was excellent as Queen Elizabeth and it was interesting as an American to see how chaotic it was over there following Princess Di's death.

18. Requiem
Edited on Sun Oct-22-06 05:46 PM by Katina
A brilliant german/english subtitled film. Riveting and impelling..and like most european films, real actors, not the plastic hollywood "beautiful" people. The protagonist is a young woman who has epilepsy, but probably also suffers from schizophrenia. It focuses on her relationship with her parents, her friends and the church. It is based on a true story, but I can't tell you more for fear of ruining the story. I highly recommend it.

A friend of mine just saw Last King of Scotland and said it was brilliant. Forrest Whittaker as Idi Amin was chillingly compelling.

21. Keeping Mum, the Prestige
Keeping Mum with the wonderful Maggie Smith is funny, in the tradition of the old British movies.

We just saw the Prestige because we did not want to read about the secrets. Stay away from reviewers, they all like to say something that they think does not matter.

A really creepy movie. Yes, the production, the acting, the cinematography, even the secrets ar interesting. But all in all, a very uneasy movie where no one - except the little girl - evokes any sympathy or even empathy.

25. Romance & Cigarettes
It's a passionate and hilarious musical by John Turturro (and produced by the Coens) about the trials and infidelities of a working man. The cast is fantastic, including James Gandolfini, Susan Sarandon, Kate Winslet and Christopher Walken (who does get to dance!)

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0368222/

Also Time to Leave which is about a young, gay fashion dealing with the news that he has terminal cancer. It covers similar ground - although it's poles apart in almost every other respect - to another great film from this year, The Death of Mr Lazarescu.

Trailers (YouTube):

Romance & Cigarettes - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LPXSW0kxAt8
Time To Leave - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tNgRkmPsqAk
The Death Of Mr Lazarescu - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UocKCX16uLg (it's a rather misleading trailer - there is humour in the film, but it's not a comedy film).
