Always Use The Proper Tool:

Chainsaw vs. Pickup Truck:

MIG Welder vs. Gas Tank:

Electric Drill vs. Pool of Water:

Yep, it works!

2. Yep.

I'm kinda worried about the guy welding, myself. Well, and everybody within about a hundred feet of him.

:hi:

17. Don't worry, the supports under the truck willl collapse and the
truck will crush him before any explosion.

That level of stupid is seldom seen outside of the halls of Congress. I'm especially impressed by the dude propping up the truck with 2x4s. That's a Darwin Award itching to happen. :wow:

9. The fact that he's applying an intense jet of fire to a gas tank is more
impressive.

11. I think it's a coin toss
I wouldn't bet he emptied the tank before starting the job, but it is possible. But those 2x4s are an EMT's write up. "Transport to the ER was not indicated." Translation: We bagged that idiot with blotting paper.

12. Wouldn't an empty tank be more dangerous?
I would imagine that a full tank would rupture, spilling burning liquid (bad luck for the guy directly underneath, of course), but a vapor-filled tank would be more explosive.

But what do I know, really?

13. Good point, petronius
When my one true love gets up from his nap, I'll check your hypothesis. OTL has been an ammo man, auto mechanic and paramedic, so he knows all about the inherent evil disposition of inanimate objects.

14. That's quite the resume!
I'll be interested in hearing from the voice of experience - I've heard that gas tanks exposed to flames don't really explode as violently as the TV would lead us to believe, but since burning cars aren't a large part of my day-to-day activities, I don't really know...

15. Your hypothesis is correct
Gasoline vapors will explode when exposed to an open flame and oxygen. Gasoline burns; it doesn't explode which why napalm works. Idiot dude isn't working on the gas tank; that's under the rear axle. However, if the gas tank is empty or nearly so, if it's leaking, if there's no breeze, idiot would get maybe a nanosecond to think about the volatile qualities of gasoline vapors before that truck rose a couple of feet into the air, then fell back down on him. Or not, if he's blown across the street.

So no, gas tanks don't normally explode. The gas can and does burn in special circumstances, but that's not as much fun to watch as a car blowing up.

18. Thanks for the authoritative word...
:toast:

(However, I think I'll continue to make it a habit to keep my open flames and my flammable liquids in different places, and I'll probably still be a bit put out if a car-chase movie doesn't include at least one massive explosion! :))

20. No car chase complete without one.
Right up there with the guy in the red shirt will get killed, especially if he's on guard duty.

19. No it's treating them and the stuff you're working on with
disrespect that's idiotic.

A bit from Kipling's The Secret of the Machines

But remember, please, the Law by which we live,
We are not built to comprehend a lie,
We can neither love nor pity nor forgive.
If you make a slip in handling us you die!

21. Seems like the question we should be asking
about Moran Welder Dude is, "If he has to use 2x4s as jackstands, how'd he get the truck up that high?"

Dude ain't that dumb, though. He did block the rear wheel.

Maybe his pals, Bubba and Guido, did the heavy lifting.

I'm surprised he didn't use his beer cooler for the block.
