So, I had my first boxing lesson last night |
|
I wanted to do some good cardio/upper body cross-training, and all roads lead to this. So, I found a real boxing gym relatively close by.
OMG. It was SO much fun, and so empowering! Of course, I'm DYING this morning, and the three of the knuckles on my left hand are cracked and swollen.
I urge it for every female on the board. I was the oldest one there, so you can't use that as an excuse.

I'm interested to know what your first lesson was like. What did they have you do?

2. Well, we did some basic warmups and warm downs |
|
And, the boxing stuff was:
First, I was taught how to do basic punches on a heavy bag, then we did footwork drills of four rounds at three minutes each -- I learned how to move around (how to turn, etc.). THEN, the most fun part: I did about 30 minutes of "sparring" with him. ie, like in "Girlfight," when they wear the mitts, and teach you combinations. I must have caught on pretty quick, because he taught me the hook, uppercut, and some other stuff.
I was going to tell you something else, but forget what it was!
I am sooo sore this morning.

4. That sounds like a helluva workout.... |
|
When I was in HS I took up boxing at a local club. The first couple of weeks all the trainer had me do was sit-ups and teach me how to work the heavy bag. I played HS football and thought I was in pretty good shape.I wasn't. I was sore as shit for about a week, especially my shoulders.
I was only an average boxer but, I did enjoy the sport.
Good luck and keep us posted on your progress.

6. I run between 4-7 miles a day, with more on the weekends |
|
And, THAT is the only thing that saved me from completely dying. At least my cardio and legs were good.

Pretty intense workout isn't it? You're going to start a trend here on DU: The DU boxers's club. Those freeps better watch out, or we're gonna send our women after them! ;)

and it pretty much does the same. We train on sandbags and after 5 min, the knuckles go raw.
