'Sexsomniacs' Puzzle Medical Researchers


LONDON, Oct. 25, 2006 — Researchers are struggling to understand a rare medical condition where sufferers unknowingly demand, or actually have, sex while asleep, New Scientist magazine reported on Wednesday.

Research into sexsomnia — making sexual advances towards another person while asleep — has been hampered as sufferers are so embarrassed by the problem they tend not to own up to it, while doctors do not ask about it.

As yet there is no cure for the condition, which often leads to difficulties in relationships.

"It really bothers me that I can't control it," Lisa Mahoney told the magazine. "It scares me because I don't think it has anything to do with the partner. I don't want this foolish condition to hurt us in the long run."

Most researchers view sexsomnia as a variant of sleepwalking, where sufferers are stuck between sleep and wakefulness, though sexsomniacs tend to stay in bed rather than get up and walk about.

5. I think my wife did this once.

Without getting to detailed to avoid a lock: We were in bed asleep when she started bumping up against me and doing things to make it VERY clear that she wanted sex. She even removed items of clothing herself. I happily complied with her "demands" and did my husbandly duty :)

The next morning she refused to talk to me for hours, but finally angrily accused me of having sex with her while she was sleeping. She said that she woke up to find me having sex with her, and that she didn't struggle because she was in shock at what was happening. When I told her that she'd come on to me, she was adamant that she'd been asleep until I woke her up in the middle of having sex.

We both let it drop and it wasn't a real problem between us, but I'll never forget about it. It was just...wierd.
