A friend needs those fabulous DU vibes...
I just found out that the mother of one of my best friends died very suddenly.

She was walking down the stairs, tripped, fell, hit her head...and it killed her. I don't have details, but this was sudden and shocking, to say the least.

My friend is now basically alone. Her father died a few years ago, she's divorced, a single mother. And now she has to tell her 8-year-old son that his favorite "gram" died.

And I'm 1500 miles away, so I'm of really very little help to her.

So DU, do me a favor. Help me send her prayers, positive thoughts, mojo, good vibes...whatever you're in to. I know they do help!

3. Thanks.
I just feel so completely freakin' useless...

Her mom was one of those sweet people who treated you like family from the first time she met you.

It's just...so wrong. Sigh.

5. That is just wrong...there's never a good time or a good way...
But still. :(

7. This is true
It's never really "good" or "right" but oy...I don't even know what to say. Shocking, obviously. And really quite horrible.

Though I guess the "at least she didn't suffer" platitude applies...

14. My dear huskerlaw!
How horrifying..........

All my best vibes and good thoughts and prayers to your friend and her son...

Perhaps, just perhaps, this little poem might help her....

Life is eternal;

And love is immortal;

And death is only a horizon;

And a horizon is nothing

Save the limit of our sight.

16. Thanks.
It really is awful.

This is one of those times when I wish California and Nebraska weren't half a continent apart. I feel absolutely awful that I can't be there for her.

Part of me is saying, you know, fuck it. Plop down the $500+ for a plane ticket and go. I don't know. I might do it.

But then my realistic side says "but what about work and you're throwing another friend a birthday party on Saturday and you can't really afford that ticket and..." Ugh. But I want to be there for her. Grr. Whatever. I don't know.

17. Thank you.
Really I'm fine, aside from feeling like shit that I can't be there for her...and torn because I'm sorta thinking about tossing aside my other responsibilities and going anyway...

But really it's my friend and her son that need the positive thoughs. So thank you.

21. You got it, hl
My deepest sympathies to your friend. When (not if) I lose
Mom, I'll be a basket case. I don't know your friend's faith,
but being NE, I'm guessing Christian. She has my prayers.

She's basically a-religious, but I think if pressed, she'd admit to being Lutheran. Like a good little midwesterner. ;)
