:eyes:

I would like to hereby apologize to anybody who pointed out homophobia on DU for any time I might not have seen it or thought you were seeing a bigger problem than there was. This is completely fucking ridiculous, but at least a lot of people are showing their true colors.

Fuck, I feel betrayed by shit like that, and I could get married today if I felt like it. It's a violation of Democratic principles, not to mention just plain nasty and indecent.

edit: Nobody's going to downplay the need for equality of my friends and people that I love while I can yell and march and type. I'm shocked so few here feel that way. :(

I really expected a civil and celebratory thread, with some analysis of the ruling and at worst some argument over the marriage v. civil unions question it leaves unanswered. I was floored by the actual threads.

6. My question: Ok, so it's not likely that the homophobia is coming...
...from the far left. So what part of the Democratic spectrum is likely to have problems with this? Is this "centrists"? I'm assuming in good faith all 100% of people with these sentiments are voting Democratic, are Democrats.

So what segment of the Democratic "population" spectrum do they represent?

9. I don't know.
The one thing they all have in common seems to be that they think this is a battle for votes and not a battle to improve lives and save our country. Votes are a tool, and they only matter when we fight with the determination of dying men for that which matters to us.

... just because someone thinks something will be perceived negatively by voters doesn't mean that they perceive it that way.

I don't think this ruling will mean squat vote-wise, because I don't believe the majority of Americans are in fact homophobes. The fundie dumbasses will cry in their non-alcoholic beer, and the rest of us will cheer a court decision that is as American as apple pie.

What does the homophobic vote do? On the one hand you have the NJ decision...on the other hand you have Foley. Maybe they'll give up and stay home. I hope so. I think the anti-gay issue is only going to work for the Republicans for one or two more election cycles before it starts to hurt them more than it helps them. Then at least some of the bullshit will stop.

You're one of the good guys... even if you don't eat marshmallows.

At least this time it's overt, instead of the nudge-nudge stuff we jump on people about and then get reamed by other posters for being mean, etc.

Some posts in DU are literally sickening to me -- like a white supremacist posting on an NAACP board.

NJ gays aligned with Samantha Stephens to control the birthday of that judge, so that she would be forced to retire two weeks before the election, thereby selfishly destroying the hopes of those in Fundieland.

41. God, those posts make me sick!
So which is it, homophobes? Is it a "fringe, special interest" issue that no REAL people really care about, or is it the red nuclear button that's going to bring about the Dem apocalypse?

Trying to have it both ways. Like those fundies who say homosexuality is "unnatural" and then when you point out it's been observed in 1500 animal species, say "Well, we should rise above our animal natures."

Just grasping at any straws to not have to question their own ignorance and bigotry and total indifference to the oppression of others as long as it doesn't directly affect THEM.

Funny, DU collectively goes off so easily in a froth whenever there's a perception that some politician might be selling out essential values and principles for political gain. Rightly so, but sometimes I think there's a hair trigger and it's unfair. And yet there are those here who want to do the exact same thing, baldly and boldly, and get flamey and defensive when they're called on it.

42. People in GD need to learn to be careful what they wish for
I posted a whole thread about how this is all fucking ridiculous. Everybody's so damn worried that this will somehow fuel the religious right to turn out on election day when really they have no evidence to prove one way or another. Frankly I think that if any professional pundit tries to predict how this effect the election, about half of that prediction will be based on completely non scientific factors and pure guessing. There's simply too much unknown here. Furthermore, it's not like they could've postponed this seeing as the Menendez campaign doesn't control the NJ Supreme Court.

The decision was a step in the right direction for equal rights and how it effects the election doesn't matter because it was completely beyond our control. People need to leave it at that and get back to focusing on how we can win in November rather than predicting our defeat 2 weeks early.

When I said that I thought the Reverend Fred Phelps should spend his own money suing the state of Missouri claiming his anti-gay protests at soldiers funerals was free and protected speech instead of the ACLU using it's member's dues to fight for him. Oh boy the so-called "card carrying" members did not like me giving "my" opinion about the ACLU doing that.
