Edited on Thu Oct-26-06 04:05 AM by Omphaloskepsis
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marfan_syndrome (I went in with a severe case of arthritis, I was 20 and couldn't write on paper without severe pain)

Gaining weight won't help that. I want to put on a few pounds so the ladies will love me.

edit -- the pain in my hands went away after a few years.. I'm better now.. The cause of that is unknown.. Marfan still stands.

But it's not about me or anyone else, is it?

If you want to do this for you, you'll get a lot of support here. But if you want to do it for someone else, I'd say they're not worth it.

As far as I'm concerned, you don't need to change a thing.

Well... except your location. It should be much closer to mine.

You have to eat to live, it is easy to quit drugs and drinking, but you have to eat to live. I had a lot of trouble losing weight with exercise, diet the whole nine. I finally resorted to Lap-Banding. That is the only thing that has really worked for me. Now that was the answer for me, I am not saying everyone should do what I did.

like for example 10 extra lbs. your body will get used to weighing more and try to fight weight loss. We still have not evolved to where the body knows we are not starving when we try and lose weight. I am also in the same boat. I don't just want to go out and buy bigger clothes as some people have advised. According to a recent article I read, the key is exericising more. Also, don't cut calories drastically because that can make things worse because then your body really thinks you are starving. And lift those weights! That is the most important type of exericise to prevent extra weight.

55. i know what you're going through
especially the frustration over clothes not fitting anymore. i put on a bit of weight recently and i throw the occasional tantrum when i something that doesn't fit anymore.

i'm trying to start with smaller things (less soda, healthier snacks and eating a bit more consistently through the day) and it seems to be working a bit. my big problem is my job - unpredictable hours and daily schedule with lots of stress and it's not always so easy to have a normal eating routine.

63. Hi MissHoneychurch!
As I recall from the famous match-the-DU-ladies-with-their-butts picture, you look great.

I'm a big believer in the 20/80 rule (20% of the effort gets you 80% of the good.) Is there a simple thing you can do? One food you can substitute? Can you walk or bike some place? I dropped 9 lbs like an armload of bricks when I started bicycle-commuting to my job in Chicago. Nowadays I'm walking to work in Santa Barbara.

If you're like me and have the attention span of a gnat, you'll never stick with it unless it's pleasant or you have to do it (eg climbing six flights is the only way you'll get to your bed.)

Just make one change and see what happens. Ya never know.

67. You hit the nail on its head
let's see. I have to walk 5 stairs each day to get to my apt (no elevator). So much for climbing I have to do.

I am not a fan of sport so to find something I really enjoy is tough. And of course it is more fun if you have someone to do it with you than alone. And there is the next problem. I don't have many friends here in Frankfurt. And the ones I have don't need to exercise. I know those are all excuses. But you said it. I have the attention span of a gnat when it comes to exercise.

Oh and thanks for the compliment :)

64. because the human body has evolved into a form that tries to keep
the status quo.

You have to trick your body to lose weight. Very tiny changes over a long period of time.

Do something drastic, and your body thinks there's a famine, and it goes into conservation mode.

Oh yeah, and of course there's always your own genetic predisposition to size, your own glandular issues, and other underlying medical or physiological issues.

The deck is stacked against you, for sure.

66. Your body thinks you are starving and must conserve energy.
Weight gain is like a valve that only flows one way. For that reason it is much harder to loose than to gain unless you are in a prison camp or something. The key seems to be to train your body to burn fat rather than the usual sugar. This is where the aerobic excercise comes in. The calories one loses on the treadmill are negligible. What is significant is that it trains the enzymes in your cells to burn fat wich can only be burned aerobically. This is in contrast to sugar which is burnt anaerobically and leaves that burning sensation after exertion. If you are excercising so hard you cannot talk, who are burning mostly sugar. The idea is to keep a slow pace for a long time. While the excercise is necessary, 90% is diet and calory reduction.

69. It's getting to be winter
I don't know if this is actually scientifically true or not, but it is harder to lose weight in the fall and winter. That is because that is the time that mammals traditionally hibernate, are more likely to face famine, have higher energy needs if we are active (staying warm), need insallation to keep warm, and are more vunerable to disease. The body is more likely to conserve fat and increase appetite if there is any danger of losing fat. You can try cutting things like sugery drinks and making lower calorie substitutions to try to get on the right track, but you will probably have better luck losing weight six months from now.

70. It is not hard to lose weight.
It is hard for us to discipline ourselves and make the sacrifices necessary to lose weight.
